Whatever legitimately retarded people want to do should be allowed. Should be able to do heroin if they wanted. Their lives suck, do whatever makes them happy.

It isn't. Conservatorship is a cumbersome, expensive, and lengthy process and literally no one has it by default.

I don’t think people understand how big of a problem this can be.

This is the most fricked up, “supportive” post you could have conceived.

My brother and sister are mentally-challenged (but don't have Downs or Autism).

They love going with my parents to the casino to play slots. They have even won before (the most I think was a couple thousand on one slot machine).

Is OP saying they shouldn't be allowed in the casino to gamble...even though they are 31 and 33 years old?

My daughter has Downs. When she turns 21, I will absolutely allow her to have a drink with us when we go out. I’m not going to let her tie on multiple drinks and get drunk, but I’m not going to deny her the experience of having a drink because someone who doesn’t know her or anyone with Downs judges her with no understanding of her or her abilities.

Downs severity varies greatly. If it looks like his family takes care of him (good hygiene, clothed well, respected as a family member) then I would let the family make decisions for him. He might drink a few drinks and laugh and have a good time, what’s wrong with that? Now if it’s a trashy family that let him drink till he pukes while they make fun of him, then we have a problem and the family should be reported to family services.

It doesn’t sound like it was the later in this case. So, you should lighten up.

My parents don't usually drink so neither do my siblings when they go with them to the casino.

However...every now and then my mom might get a daiquiri or margarita for the fun of it...and my sister might get one then just to try it as well.

See nothing wrong with that.

I'm just wondering what state laws are. I mean we can all agree it would be a crime for a casino or bar to take advantage of someone who has mental disabilities.

I've personally known downs adults who had jobs. Stocking shelves, pushing carts at Wal-Mart, working as a helper at vet's office etc (all real examples).

...but they shouldn't be allowed to have a beer after work? FOH

You could just say mentally challenged.

The R word is extremely offensive to those who are mentally challenged and their families.
