George RR Martin (sort of) reveals whether the end of his 'Game of Thrones' book will match the show
We knew this was coming.

George RR Martin has spoken. And like everyone else who loves "Game of Thrones," the author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books is in his feelings about the show ending. But he also has lots of news to share!
In a post on his personal blog, Martin updated fans on when he thinks he will finish the highly anticipated next novel in the ASOIAF series (on which "Game of Thrones" was based).
Well, kind of.
'Game of Thrones' actor addresses disgruntled fans 01:10
"Winter is coming, I told you, long ago... and so it is," Martin wrote. "THE WINDS OF WINTER is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done. I won't say when, I've tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself... but I will finish it, and then will come A DREAM OF SPRING."
For the record, the show long eclipsed the books around season four or five, which of course begs the question: Will the ending to the books, the urtext of "Game of Thrones," be different than the show?
Martin's answer is just as cryptic.
"How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different? Well... yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes."
Martin goes on to point out that books, especially his lengthy 500-plus-page tomes, are a very different medium than TV, and there are plenty of characters between his pages that never made it on to screen.
"[I]f nothing else, the readers will learn what happened to Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny and her pig, Skahaz Shavepate, Arianne Martell, Darkstar, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Garlan the Gallant, Aegon VI, and a myriad of other characters both great and small that viewers of the show never had the chance to meet," he wrote.
Book readers have been waiting faithfully for "The Winds of Winter," which will be the sixth installment of a planned seven books. The fifth book, "A Dance with Dragons," was released in 2011.
We knew this was coming.

More smoke indicating this mofo has the books essentially done and is going back to edit out the stuff people didn't like in the show.

How is this 'walking back'? It's long been the understanding that D&D were given the ending bullet points and wrote their own story to get there. Come Dream of Spring Bran may be king, Dany may die at the hands of Jon, and Tyrion may be the Hand, but the journey will be different enough.

So basically, it’s gonna be exactly the same, except with more characters who were never on the show

Like I said a couple weeks ago. This is GRRM after reading the reviews of this seasons episodes.
Zero doubt he's now editing hoping to make people a little more happy. Assuming he even releases the next book.

Anyone thinking D&D winged the ending without any input from GRRM (given how big of book fan boys they are) are retards.
GRRM is going to take his time now and flesh out the gaps in his story the memes over at /freefolk pointed out

Have you read how GRRM finishes a story?
The ending won't be as rushed and with characters standing in for others while the subplots play out.

He’s such a coward
I'm still of the belief that HBO either asked him or paid him to hold off on releasing the books so they could wrap the show up on the D&D timeline
Let's say they're halfway thru filming Season 7, and he drops Winds of Winter. The ink is dry on their Season 7 script -- they can't then halt all of their plot lines to add whatever awesome twists and turns GRRM has added in the new book.. Plus, people will start to expect things from the book to appear on the show, and when they didn't it would be mass complaining again

Dude straight up used the show as a barometer to gauge the reaction.

Obviously- considering he should have finished the books as promised years ago preventing the show from going in the crapper in the first place
Who are we really blaming here?

GRRM’s actions at this point are indefensible- he basically let two sub par writers fall on the sword - sacrificing them AND the show on the altar of one huge focus group

I have yet to see anyone say D&D winged it with NO input from GRM

What's sad is had he actually finished the books in timely manner the ending would have been much better received.

Even if they had the material would DnD done that much better the way they rushed out the door?
Disney flashed billions and they abandoned ship, screw them.

That’s my point.
HBO STARTED the show under the assumption he would finish the books as he stated - then HBO and the fans were left hanging.
Had HBO waited for him we’d still be waiting for the second half of season 5 with 5 seasons to go and no actors (because they would have aged out or moved on)

This is it pretty much right here. They also chose some odd directions for the subplots early and kept it rolling.

Had the books been done - we get maybe 2 more seasons imo - too much material.
Everything changes.
