Right, but surely you have to give some sort of reasoning for demanding 10 years of financial records, right?

I would love to see the justification for the ruling. This is getting creepy at this point. They are so freaking obsessed with getting a good "gotcha" on the guy. The best part is that even if they somehow found a law was broke, it wouldn't swing anybody's opinion on him. If we have 200 some billionaires in this country and all of them aren't getting audited annually, what's the point of the IRS?

Hey, do you know the phrase "probable cause"? You dumbass corrupt judge! I know he is corrupt because I know a judge knows the law and he chose to ignore the law and make his own.

Good. Maybe we'll finally learn how corrupt and in debt Donald is. Someone needs to force Donald into transparency.

They judge shopped and the MSM/dems got excited about this last week. It is ludicrous, they are after his accountant and bank records. If this was anybody else they would have been railroaded out already, good for Trump for fighting.
quote:

In the case before Mehta, Trump and his business organization sued the House oversight committee in April in an attempt to block a subpoena issued to Mazars USA, an accountant for the president and Trump Organization. Trump's lawyers argued the subpoena "has no legitimate legislative purpose" and accused Democrats of harassing Trump and wielding their new majority in Congress to try to stain the president's standing.

But House lawyers told the judge that the Constitution gives Congress broad powers to investigate and that it doesn't need to tie an investigation it is undertaking to a specific piece of legislation it is considering.

Mehta, who was nominated to his position by President Barack Obama, suggested during the hearing that Congress has wide latitude to investigate. He told Trump lawyer William Consovoy that there isn't a case since 1880 where the Supreme Court or an appeals court found that Congress overstepped its boundaries in issuing a subpoena.

Douglas Letter, an attorney for the House, told the judge that "President Trump has no chance of success here." And he said Trump has taken the position that Congress is "just getting in his way" of running the country.

Mehta did suggest to Letter that the subpoena does seem to be an effort to get into Trump's private affairs. And he asked Letter whether there are any limits on what Congress can obtain. Letter acknowledged that there are some outer limits, suggesting a request for the president's blood or his diary from when he was a child might be too extreme. But he said the subpoena for financial records is clearly permissible.

The judge seemed to be looking to resolve the case quickly, though he said he would accept additional materials this week.

"We're not going to drag this out," he said at one point.

The comments in this thread about the judge and his accomplishments are some of the trashiest, pathetic, scummiest, and deplorable comments I've ever seen on this site.

To discredit his ability to do his job or his ascent to that position for anything other than his credentials, abilities, and accomplishments is so immature, mean spirited, and beta to tbh. He's more accomplished than any of us could ever wish to be and just because he may not be on your side of the political isle, does not mean he can't do his job. This dude is the american dream. We should celebrate his story.

Many of you will discredit democratic judges and their abilities, but will look pass the hundreds of under qualified (comparatively), inept judges 45 has nominated just bc they agree with you. ITs well known in our legal circles that his nominees are from bad law schools, average students, way too young, and average lawyers and jugdes. The are mediocre and largely only get to where they are because of connections and proximity to power, not grit and intellectual and rhetorical prowess. The Federalist Society is the crown jewel of conservative legal mediocrity masquerading as some higher society of next level conservative legal discourse.

It is also well know that for recent law school grads aiming to go into politics, its much easier to make a name for yourself/climb the social/career ladder on the rightwing than on the left wing, and mainly bc the the rightwing is so void of actual talent. Just a bunch of demagogues and hacks that use weak logic to push their inane political view points.

Does Cummings have standing in this case? How was he damaged?

Likely not.

That doesn't stop people like Skrong Safety from justifying use of the state to punish private citizens who dare challenge the status quo of Washington.
