Why don’t they just get a real job ? We had a guy with a wife and two kids leave us about a year ago to drive for Uber. He was making descent money with us around 50k plus benefits/ bonus/ insurance. I told him he was making a mistake leaving, he came back asking for his job recently but it had already been filled. Uber/Lyft should be supplemental income only

The article mentioned Australia and Englands strikes were organized by unions, so those were definitely cab drivers.

I’ve been driving UberEats/DoorDash in between jobs. Purely supplemental income at best. Beer money if you will. These people who are striking are tards.

I haven't used it often. Maybe 3 or 4 times. I don't travel for work anymore and it's not like we are out late drinking much anymore in our 40s.

If you've followed this from its inception, it has been shady as frick. Whenever anyone tried to enter the passenger market in these cities, they were crushed. Hell even Pedi-cabs (passenger bikes) were regulated at the city level.
Think about this:
1. when phones were invented did they create a new market? i.e. Hail cabs & phone cabs
2. when CBs were invented, did they make Hail cabs, phone cabs, and CB cabs?
3. when cell phones were invented did they create hail cabs, phone cabs, cb cabs, and cell cabs?
4. however, when smart phones(app on cell phone) were invented, "oh, completely different"?
Self driving cars without the need for drivers is the future. However they could not allow Taxis to capture that with their medallion system, they needed to break up a 100 year old industry. So they got through with the idea of ride-sharing (environmentally friendly car pool).
And man they got everything:
1. taxi driver had to goto school, ride share no
2. taxi driver had to have background check, ride share no
3. taxis had to be inspected and fare regulated, ride share no.
4.taxis limited to very small amount (1,500 in San Francisco, but uber/lyft unrestricted)
so the gov, forces taxis to charge a certain fare and restricts them from growing, but allows competition to undercut them in an unrestricted manner.
VC funded competition has much deeper pockets than LOCAL only Taxi companies. They subsidize cheap fares at half the price of taxis. Taxis companies die, drivers leave, medallion holders who mortgaged their homes for a 250k-1M medallion left with nothing.
We start seeing a slow creep in fares, and shrinking % to the drivers. Now ride shares charge on par with remaining taxis, but taxis still have restricted numbers. SF, home of uber/lyft...taxis medallions now at 1,200 from 1,500, uber/lyft at over 50,000.
Morons say stuff like, "i could never get a cab before, but i can always find an uber" don't understand that "yeah dumbass, much easier to find 1 of 50,000 than 1 of 1,200." If you people wanted more passenger vehicles, then you should have asked them to increase the allowable number of taxis on the road.
Now for the strike. What it is is that the subsidized industry is going away, and the markets created can't remain cheaper without taking from what the drivers made. Essentially they are getting their wages slashed. They could make their own app, but without someone else subsidizing fares, the allure to bring people to the app is not there. I.e download app and pay as much or more than a taxi
Im not a driver, or affiliated with taxi/ride shares. I just read about local politics and am interested in the case study. My belief is that uber/lyft should follow the same ESTABLISHED laws as taxis, and operate as just another taxi company. Anything else is not debatable. If this were football, the government is allowing one team to pass the ball while the other can only run the ball.
Plant Baws. Imagine all illegals were given sanctuary and classified as 'refugees' so they could work. Then they were allowed to perform plant related activities at half your wage without a process tech degree, and the other half of their wage is subsidized by someone else so they make as much as you. All of a sudden, you get no OT, some new guys get laid off. Your hours are cut. Every one starts cheering around you saying things like "good, truck nut McMansion baws were paid too much anyway".
People dont care until they are directly affected. It's a shame, but that's human nature.

I don't see where they're arguing for benefits. They can turn the app on/off and work whenever they want. They have a choice to accept or not accept a particular ride (job). That makes them contractors, not employees. An employee would be told what hours they'd be working and wouldn't be able to pick and choose which rides they wanted to accept. Contractors don't get employee benefits.
They also want Uber's commission lowered from 25% to 15%. Uber is covering the marketing portion of finding passengers for their drivers and the driver's insurance costs while they're carrying passengers-for-hire. Some of those drivers should call an insurance agent and get a quote on commercial auto insurance for a taxi cab service and see just how expensive liability insurance is for a passenger-for-hire service.

Uber is covering the marketing portion of finding passengers for their drivers and the driver's insurance costs while they're carrying passengers-for-hire.
