Has there been a sudden increase in the demand for pickups that can tow huge weights?

Everything in the 3/4 ton market seems to now center around being able to tow a gajillion pounds and have close to 1000ft-lbs of torque. Even the 1/2 tons are sorta in on this action. Anecdotally where I live I rarely see anyone towing anything that seems to approach those large trailer numbers. Is it a real need or more of a marketing competition?

Good news for businesses that buy these things used I guess.

Bill, who lives in the Flowing Meadows subdivision, needs as much towing ability as possible to drive those 5 bags of potting soil home from Home Depot.

You must have missed the landmark study correlating towing power to penis size. It was big news for a while. More interestingly, the study also made a connection between girth and speed one can make a dark roux.

may never need to pull a gajillion pounds.
but if you need to pull half a gajillion....having a truck capable of pulling double what you need it to is nice.

smoother ride, better fuel mileage, less wear and tear, etc.
so the higher above what you’re pulling you can get, the better.

Yup, destroyed passenger vehicles in the name of mpg and 0-60 times. Now we all have slush boxes and turbos.

Baw, dont you know all the baws need that pulling power to turn there 37 MTs to get Brayden to the ball park. And never know when you will need that 4 low to get around a broken down car in traffic.

S

It's 100% marketing. Almost no one has any use for being able to tow a gajillion pounds.

Now that I have gone to a full size truck, I don't think I could go back to a smaller vehicle. I don't really do any towing, but I haul a decent amount in my bed.

The biggest difference is the interior space. The backseat is like being in a limo. If they made an suv with equal rear seat room I may consider switching.

I don't really tow anything with mine either. We are a family of 3 so I don't need a big suv and would rather have at truck bed at my disposal when I need one.

I don't think there are as many being used today as there once were. I remember seeing so many more in the '90s and early '00s before gas prices went north of $2/gal and stayed there.

We had a motorhome from '94-'96. It was a 26 foot Class C with a Ford 460 that got 7.5mpg. Filling up a 50 gallon gas tank wasn't so bad in 1995, but today? Ouch.
