2020 vision to start

No longer required, you can wear corrective lenses as long as vision is correctable to 20/20. The Navy allows LASIK, the Air Force does not.

"Candidates who pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test go to a Military Entrance Processing Station for health screening. Pilots need normal color vision, and they must meet eyesight refraction and astigmatism requirements. Distant vision must be at least 20/70 uncorrected, and near vision must be 20/30 uncorrected, but both distant and near vision must be corrected to 20/20."

"Navy Pilots must pass a Class I Flying Physical. To become a pilot in the Navy or Marine Corps, an applicant's uncorrected vision can be no worse than 20/40 (correctable to 20/20) in each eye. Once flight training begins, vision can deteriorate to no worse than 20/100 (correctable to 20/20) in each eye.Jan 8, 2019"

Waivers for everything.

Air Force requires PRK not LASIK, I think.

I flew with people who had 20/400 vision but the Navy paid for PRK and they were gtg.

As late as 1988 USN had a program for enlisted guys that did not have a degree but had 60 hours to go to AOCS and flight school

I always wanted to be a fighter pilot. Then I found out at 10 my vision was terrible. A year later I found out I was terrified of flying.

Lessons learned

And I’d say those pro baseball players could handle being a fighter pilot The other way around, not so much

I thought about going to Navy OCS 2 years after I graduated from LSU. I even went to the recruiting station and took some type of practice exam to determine my probability of success in the aviator program. At the time, I was pretty familiar with what would be required of me.

Before that, I also played professional baseball. 20-25% of my teammates were from the DR or Venezuela and didn’t speed English. Another 50-60% were either right out of high[/quote] school or had a year or two of junior college under their belt. None of those guys would ever have a chance. I can only think of 2 or 3 guys I played with that could have made it. One of them happened to pitch in the major leagues for 12 years and played professional hockey too. The other is currently a major league GM.

Can you enlist and work your way up to a fighter pilot? I was reading an article that said there’s a severe pilot shortage.

Around 2010/2011 4 or 5 of the 7 Blue Angeles pilots started in the enlisted ranks. The Navy has always had numerous programs to enable select enlisted personal a chance to earn a college degree, and be commissioned as a officer. Currently it is called "The Seaman to Admiral Program 21", there are even pathways that will allow you to attend the Naval Academy.

I have a female relative who flies off carriers. Her father was a stunt pilot so she literally grew up in airplanes.

My uncle was a fighter pilot in the Air Force staring in Vietnam until mid-80;s. Got a mechanical engineering degree from University of Arizona. He was cool as hell and a big partier.

My other uncle went to the Air Force Academy and was about as dorky as can be. He married some chick who would bang jodys when he went out of town.

The blue Angel's are about the coolest show on earth to me. I never understood the concept of being a groupie until I saw them. Every couple years they come to Tuscaloosa to do a regional airshow and I can't wait every freaking time.

Nothing has ever really impacted me the same way as watching f-18's do all those flybys. So damn epic.

I personally think I would get more satisfaction being ground support. An A-10 would be wonderful. If they brought the prop sky readers back that be fun too. Hell, I’d even be content orbiting overhead raining down 105 rounds as long as I could see the little bastards being exterminated.

the Marines still had a program, at least up till the Vietnam era, where an enlisted guy could get sent to flight school, don't know much about it, only reason I do know is because that Northwest 727 Captain that got busted for flying drunk way back when was in that program, I also have a friend that's a Navy pilot that got in some weird program in college, not ROTC, where he was enlisted in the Navy, was getting E-5 pay for four years, and never had to drill or go to boot camp or anything, got flight school upon graduation, it was a loophole that has since closed up, program doesn't exist anymore but this is fairly recent
