Austin Chalk Updates?

Anyone know how the development is going in the Austin Chalk? I know Conoco has been drilling that one well for quite some time and I believe filed a permit for an additional well. I had Marathon was making some infrastructure investments about 18 months ago, but otherwise it has been quiet. Anyone know how Conoco’s well is producing? Any news from other companies? Was hoping for this work out for South Louisiana.

I'm especially disappointed at the dearth of activity after all the early hoopla and tons of money being thrown at huge 3D initiatives by EOG, especially in the Avoyelles/St. Landry area.

I also work on the service side and visit Conoco locations. Madtown is correct from what I've been told. Conoco is finishing up well in St. Francisville, moving 50 some-odd miles to East towards Clinton and drilling last of 4 wells. Completions to follow & then lay back and gather data.
All indications thus far have pointed toward "we plan to be here a while" -verbatim from Conoco Drilling Mgr.
Seems like a lot of the investment and excitement (on the service side) have died down as some investment backed service companies who opened up shop are beginning to close/ layoff. My own opinion is the Austin Chalk will be successful, but will takes years to develop with an underwhelming number of rigs running at any given time due to drastic increase in drilling efficiencies over the past few years.
There are also a handful of additional companies whom will become active soon in the area. ex. Petroquest.

How did you feel about the TMS?

Will be lucky to make it to 2020 with that balance sheet.

does not appear to be too much going on
DNR-SONRIS
click on the well information tab then either by parish or company.
ConocoPhillips has 2 drilling permits for 2019 and 3 for 2018

I looked at SONRIS, and I saw the production on one of the Conoco wells was 60 barrels a day. I was expecting closer to 1000 a day. I am guessing the well is still being developed? Going to be hard to recoup those drilling costs on 60 barrels a day.

I have looked at the chalk for two different companies and came to the same conclusion. Economics will be hard to get into place for it to be viable for long. There will always be a few good wells mixed in the mostly poor well. They make a ton of water and managing that water is too cost prohibitive. That coupled with poor wells intermixed is very bad. Sorry, as a Baton Rouge native I wanted to be able to work the play in my home state, but that just isn’t so.
Hope I am proven wrong by EOG, Marathon, and others.

As of now it’s uncertain what their first well is doing. They clearly ip’d the well within a few hours of flowback with the large water volumes. I heard rumors from a guy who is doing work for cop that it had cleaned up to 1800 bopd but as is usual in this business it’s strictly a rumor until real production numbers hit sonris. Eog is going Updip with their ironwood well like others have mentioned. Word is marathon ran into high pressure in the curve landing their lateral and were worried the pressure was higher than the intermediate string was rated for. Supposedly a vintage 90’s chalk blowout occurred in the area nearby. Believe they are drilling the second well pretty close by.

"The map below depicts the current drilling activity in the Louisiana Austin Chalk Play. The ConocoPhillips McKowen #1 is back online after tubing was installed. We hope for some good production results once the frac water has been produced. The Hebert #1 frac job was completed last week. The well should be flowing back now. The Erwin #1 is drilling in the lateral.
May 17-25 is the anticipated spud date for the EOG Ironwood 37H-1. Having two rigs drilling side-by-side in the core of the LAMS Stack Play will be nice. Two great operators is a good thing."

Hearing CoP is excited about La AC...what are you hearing about McKowen production?
They have only flowed back the well and have not released current production numbers. Very interested to see the first full month when they come out on SONRIS. Any baws have any inside info?

Given recent news of expanded exploration(CoP + EOG), suspect the royalty market will heat up

You can absolutely bet on that...prior to this news coming out, I was hearing sellers asking for ~$3,500/acre around East Feliciana, I imagine that number is only increasing, esp when IPs and a few months of production become available and the area is delineated. Very exciting times

I came across a presentation by Equinor - They have some interests in leases in Vernon parish. I haven’t heard much about them in the area besides GOM. Fingers crossed for these guys.

CGG, Fairfield Geotechnologies Join Forces on 578 sq. mi. Avoyelles/Rapides/Evangeline/Saint Landry Survey (Bayou Boeuf)
"CGG and Fairfield Geotechnologies have signed a cooperation agreement to acquire a large-scale, multi-client survey in South Central Louisiana. The new 578-square-mile wide-azimuth survey, known as Bayou Boeuf, is designed to image the Austin Chalk play and provide a better understanding of the formations in this area which have recently regained industry interest."

The first month released on sonris for the mckowen well is really poor, practically a producing dry hole. Maybe they’ll have better luck moving up dip. You can go read the Kirk barrel write up if you prefer positive spin on it. These wells are also going to have to be really good to account for the extra 2-3$mm a large company like conoco will spend over smaller operators. I also think it’s interesting that barrel has coined the term la stack play - everybody knows the tms is dead for all intents and purposes.

The only production month on SONRIS is March 2019 (1,006 bbls) and that is a partial production month, prob only for a few days, as they flowed the well back from the frac in the middle of March 2019.
April 2019 will be very telling, assuming they produced it for a full month and didnt mess with the choke. I assume they need to do >20,000 bbl/month initially for it be economical, considering it performs similar to the Texas Austin Chalk, which is way more than 1,006 in March.
