Tim Tebow was a first round draft pick.

Tebow made even less sense though.

Russell Wilson, the guy he is compared to the most went in the 3rd round.
Well... he probably shouldn’t have in hindsight
Always best to be the second guy in line in these situations

IIRC, Jeff George was considered a huge reach, and only the Colts were interested in drafting him that high. He wasn’t a highly coveted pick, especially not trading like the Colts did to take him #1 overall. I could be remembering that wrong though.

FALCONS WANT GEORGE NO. 1

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
April 11, 1990
On a scale of 1 to 10, one National Football League scout was asked: How would you rate the passing skills demonstrated by Illinois quarterback Jeff George during recent workouts?
''I would rate him a 12,'' said the scout, one of two dozen or so who converged on the junior-eligible rookie combine in Indianapolis last weekend. George performed in front of 15 NFL scouts in Champaign last week. He reportedly unleashed passes of 80 yards to Illinois teammate and pro prospect Mike Bellamy, as well as snappy timing-touch tosses that caught the eyes of the evaluating contingent.
His stock has risen so rapidly in the past several days the Atlanta Falcons now say they will make him the No. 1 pick in the April 22-23 draft.
A highly recruited star at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, George transferred from Purdue to Illinois after considering Miami.
''I learn offenses quickly; I had to,'' George said last weekend in Indianapolis, where he underwent a physical but did not throw.
''If a team (in the NFL) wants me to play right off, that`s what I want. I don`t want to go to a team, sit on the bench and wait for my time to come. That`s why I decided to go to the NFL.''
George would become the first ever Illinois No. 1 (overall) pick in the NFL.
The New England Patriots, who have the third choice in the first round, were hoping George would be around when they make their selection.

Kyler will be a top 5 qb within 3 years.

Russell Wilson, the guy he is compared to the most went in the 3rd round.
This idea that he's a massive reach is a dated comment. Maybe if it was 2009 or 1999. But not now.

it has everything to do with everything. are you fricking retarded? do you not understand how QB stats tend to progress from their sophmore to junior to senior years?
You're basically arguing what I said in the OP.
Murray has 1 year of experience, not 4 like like Baker Mayfield.
Thus he's completely overhyped and will need several years just to become a viable NFL QB.

No, that would be the Bengals taking Akili Smith with the 3rd overall pick. The Saints offered 9 draft picks, including a pair of #1s, for the pick. Saints wanted Rickey Williams.
Smith's stats-
-signed a $56 million contract, $10+MM signing bonus
-threw 5 touchdowns (not in a game or even a season- for his career)
-26 turnovers (13 interceptions & 13 fumbles)
-17/41 154 yards 0/1 were his combined stats from his 3rd & 4th seasons in the NFL (his final 2)
Next 4 picks were: Edge James, Rickey Williams, Tory Holt, & Champ Bailey

Is this because all the best QBs now retire and the league contracts to 8 teams due to the XFL eating their lunch?

No. He'll be regretting choosing football over baseball in three years.

This idea that Murray will be a massive bust is so short sided.

The crowd that thinks this is borderline 'tarded

I’m leaving George’s abilities alone, as he was seen as kind of a JaMarcus Russell of his day.
His intangibles should have scared the shite out of everyone though.
How many high end prospects, especially in those days, ended job transferring multiple times in high school and college? It should have gotten the Colts to take a closer look at why he bounced around so much. As it turned out, it is because he was an a-hole.

yep, was just going to post this
In the weeks leading up to that draft, his agent was doing work. We've all seen busts, but Smith had no reason to go in the 1st.

What about the Raiders taking DHB 8th overall, ahead of Crabtree, Maclin and Harvin?
