Its a big part of a staff issue. Josh just explained why its partly on pitching and gave examples. The power arm guys need to get to the plate quicker.

To be fair they have both been really bad this year.

I can guarantee you that its not all on Mathis

So what percentage then? And have you not noticed the difference since Garza took over?

Johnny Bench could be catching for this team. First time he slips..bring in the backup catcher !!!

Mathis is more polished
huh.

Garza receives the ball so much better.

Garza has a higher ceiling, no doubt, but his current health , I don't see how he can play 3 games in 3 days this season.

We are going to need both.

I would say probably around 55-60% on the pitchers.

I’m all for keeping him on the mend but he is a better option than Mathis.

does it really matter, when both are really having bad years; alternating seems to be the best option, imo

Some of the pitchers could certainly be part of the problem, but it is clear we have a deficiency at the catcher position.

Overall, I think Mathis has done a great job considering the situation

He’s one of the worst in the country at throwing out base runners. Second most pass balls in sec. and batting in the 100s

What are you talking about

Lets not leave out the fact that he cannot frame pitches and is so bad at times he turns strikes into balls by the way he catches the ball.

I really don't want to bash a kid, I could only dream my kids could be as good of a player as Mathis. But he is deficient at the position. Garza has looked better in all aspects, and he isn't as fluid as we are used to seeing.

The throwout issue is probably as much on the pitchers as Mathis, if not more. Mathis is not terrible in getting rid of it and his arm seems adequate.

We simply are not good at holding runners on

67 bases stolen on us this year, next highest in sec is 46. Ole miss, ark and A&m have 22 or less. You can’t tell me that’s all due to pitching.

Not all due to pitching no. But you seem to like stats, here is one, we are last in the sec in pick offs against sec competition.. Our pitchers have not picked off one runner. I am on my phone but wouldn’t be surprised if we haven’t picked off a runner period.

We picked off a runner on first base in the game last night.

I missed the game.
So 1.
Still worst in the Sec against the Sec.
It is on both, as I said.

Yea, the dude slipped when he decided to return to 1st base after he realized he wouldn't make it to second.
