Murdaugh faces up to 25 years in prison with a minimum sentence of one year, according to South Carolina law.

Without family money and influence, they might not be little bitches in the first place.

Would a prominent lawyer like J. Edward Bell III take this case for the civil suit?

30 years ago or more the parents of the girl would have had to look at least to the upstate of SC for a lawyer if not out of state, in today's legal climate they can have their pick of Charleston attorneys.

Was wondering how the Charleston area was in regards to nepotism/legal climate.

I stand by my original prediction. They'll sentence him, say to 5 years, but 4 will be excused and the 1 will be used for "evaluation" and "time already served" (which is some type of "house arrest" currently.)
I was stretching when I thought he'd get 6 months community service. I'm sort of doubting he'll even get that much when it's all said and done.
I'm certain the record will be expunged.

Not to sound cruel, but the victim isn't some Yankee transplant nobody knows or cares about. She's a Hampton County native. This one isn't going to be swept under the rug.

Charleston
Charleston is one of the last bastions of Old South culture and the legal community worked that way too but has changed significantly in the last 30 years, it is as aggressive as any other area now.
In the 90s I would try cases in the summer in seersucker suits, it helped deliver the folksy charm Charleston juries appreciated. That ship has sailed unless you are in your 70s. Today having a "powerful" name is a negative as a defendant just like most everywhere.
