When an entire industry of beard care products that rival the womens hair care aisle was spawned.
And I have a beard, well goatee anyway. Have had a beard of one sort or another for 20+ years.

My friend is a warden and he said the whole “beard” thing started in jail so the inmates could tell who was “available”

At one time most of the car salesman wore goatee’s and beards. I think they were trying to hide their face.

I think the recent technology & social media boom timeline has had a lot to do with it. Dudes of all walks of life have always had beards (if they liked beards), and no one really gave a shite.
Now in the days of mass social media usage, dudes everywhere are growing beards because it’s trendy and cool, not just because they like beards.

Facial hair has been going downhill since the mid-1990s, when frat boys started sporting goatees.

When razors started to get more and more expensive during bad times. Easier to grow the beard instead of wasting money on 5blade razors.
Like women wearing panty hose more when the economy is down.

Did men always talk about each other's beards and say how manly they are?
I feel like it is a thing within the last 10 years, and that would correlate to when they became hipster.
