So I am wanting something with more knockdown and for closer range than my 5.56 AR so am thinking of getting a 300blk. I didn't realize until I started looking how short the barrels are on these things, 7-8" in some cases which seems insane for a rifle round.

Recommendations on barrel length and manufacturer?

I dont need anything special and not looking to break the bank. My 5.56 is a PSA which has served me well but not sure if they are still a reliable brand. I went to their website and was surprised how cheap they were.

Tia

<-----@gmail.com. I have one for sale. BTW, you have to have a Tax Stamp to own a short barrel.

If it isn’t suppressed, prob best barrel length is 14 inches with a pinned comp.
it will perform great with a good barrel.
Can use big bullets subsonic or lighter weight bullets loaded to about 30-30 ballistics. Has very little recoil.
Really a great round for a kids deer rifle out to about 150 yards or so.
I have an ar and an encore w a pistol barrel and a contender w a carbine barrel.
Shooting deer w the pistol and varmit bullets loaded hot is a hoot.
At 100 yards, sounds like you hit them w a baseball bat.
Really shines suppressed.
Good can on a ar sounds like a 22. On a single shot carbine or pistol is really nice.

The 300 was designed to shoot from an 8” barrel. A longer barrel doesn’t really help, but it doesn’t hurt. I believe you lost a little in the ballistics with a rifle length barrel.

You can shoot super-sonic or sub-sonic rounds and those ballistics vary a good bit. Sub-sonic is great if you put a suppressor on.

I have. 10.5” PSA 300BLK with a flashcan. shite is awesome.

Get a SBA3 brace. They’re awesome and let’s just say they’re very akin to a stock....

I ended up getting a pistol lower because I wanted to shoot suppressed. Just be aware that subsonic rounds have the trajectory of a rainbow. It is also hard to get a bullet that will deform at all at such slow speeds. At standard velocities they do just fine though.
Really is a fun gun to shoot.

I went a different route and got a bolt-action Ruger Ranch in 300 Blackout. It's a great little gun light accurate and very short so it can he shot by kids. It's the gun I carry all year while I'm driving around the lease looking for pigs or coyotes. Depending on your needs I would highly recommend this rifle. Oh and it comes threaded. I put a little muzzle brake on it. Barely kicks.

You want more thumping power in short range you want the 458 SOCOM in your AR.

Or 6.5 Grendel which is probably the most versitile of the AR15 rounds. It has a great balance of long range ballistics and heavier bullets over the 556. It's kind of like a baby 308 for an ar15 platform.

Fun, versatile round. Probably better options available depending on what your primary use for it will be, especially if you never plan on suppressing it (really shines here). Was my first AR build, and to this day my favorite. Very fun to shoot and runs like a top.

I have a 300blk SBR/suppressed 10.5". I only run subs through it.There is nothing like running a .30 cal. that sounds like a nail gun:)

Looking back I would go pistol version with an (SB brace) like others have mentioned very little recoil.
The only concerns I have run into are FMJ subsonic loads ricochet like a SOB depending on what you are shooting into.

PSA will work fine. 300blk load has complete powder burn @ 9" A close friend of mine runs a 8.5" with the SB brace no issues.
