I vividly remember my elementary school teachers would always say stuff like "Fox News is conservative-leaning. MSNBC is liberal-leaning, and CNN is the most moderate of them all."

Obviously, this is no longer the case. In reality, they're all varying degrees of left-leaning.

Were my teachers' opinions ever accurate? When did the shift start?

I ask this as a young guy who really only began paying attention to politics about mid-way through Obama.

They used to report news.

Then the 24 hour news stations began, they regurgitated news 24 hours a day, the same crap over and over.

Then they started a few interview shows.

Now they are 24 hour entertainment networks.

I can remember when the only television news you got was the local news at 5, 6, and 10 and the major network news after the local. CNN was around in the 80's but a lot of people still didn't have cable. Newspapers were considered to be leaning one way or the other. I guess is was during W's first term that I noticed it being said that Fox was right leaning, etc. I don't know if it was because the left was buttsore over the 2000 election, or if it was said long before that and it was only then I noticed it.

My old man always said Cronkite was a Commie but at least he kept it to himself (except during the Tet Offensive).

EDIT: Tigerfoot nailed it.

The media have always been libs. It's natural.

They haven't always been anti-American though. That became a thing with Walter Cronkite and his pro-Commie reports on Vietnam

Truth is left-leaning.

For me, Walter Cronkite was one of the last major news journalist. He presented just the facts, not opinions or theories. You never knew what political party he was affiliated with, and "that's the way it is", or should be.

It remains fair to say Foxl leans right and MSNBC leans left. CNN floats somewhere in the space between the two. Even most of rhis board seemed to agree with this description
Until the Pumpkin singled out CNN as his nemesis. The troops snapped back in line.

MSNBC wasn't always ultra liberal. Hell, Chris Matthews used to be conservative. His show Hardball was always a decent watch. Not sure when he shifted to liberal loon along with the entire lineup at MSNBC. It became nothing more than propaganda when Tim Russert died.

I always thought CNN was somewhat fair. Trump either broke them or I actually started paying attention. They used to have several shows which split evenly between liberal and conservative. They got rid of all of them around 2005. Now, they have 9 liberal talking head screaming at one weak willed conservative. Similar to how Hannity used to have Colmes to beat up on.

The Sunday shows have all gone from being hosted by conservatives to hosted by liberals.

TV news has been openly left wing since the 60s. They were more careful about it back then. I noticed the drop of pretense of objectivity starting around 2000 during the 'count every vote' fiasco.

The more interesting research would be to examine newspapers prior to the advent of TV. You can view microfiche copies of old newspapers from 100 years ago.

The big differences:

Newspapers used much more complex sentence structure and much larger vocabularies than today. They were aimed at an educated audience.

Papers carried 10 times the number of individual stories than a modern day print edition. No pictures. No eye catching graphs.

Separate pages were set aside for women and 'coloreds'. The 'women's section' was renamed 'Living' around 1970.

There was no "Opinion Page". It was called 'Editorial Page" because it was the opinion of the editors of the paper.

The Sunday "Weddings Section" was HUGE! Everybody got married back in those days. The details were about the family lineage of the bride and groom. Very little about their education or careers.

I figure CNN sold their souls to the devil when their rating started to drop...
As far as Weather news, that started right after Katrina. I guess acting like chicken little sells..Locally Margaret Orr is the worst..

In general, they could all be trusted. Cronkite and Huntley-Brinkley impressed me as so. That said, I relied heavily on the judgment of my parents. One thing for sure, they certainly didn't conduct themselves the way CNN and MSNBC do today. They all seemed to conduct themselves like adults, all the while exhibiting a clear and unquestioned respect for the office of the POTUS and the other 2 branches.

The whole Culture has moved Left, TS. Socialist was a pejorative, and essentially an existential evil and threat back when. ALL News channels accepted and promoted this view.

Khrushchev bragged and said that "we'll take you without firing a shot". Like you, few of us paid enough attention to Ideological/Philosophical Ideology to understand what His threat meant. He knew though; the Egalitarian Idea is a powerful (moral) impetus. And a practical, realistic nightmare. "Behold, there is a way that seemeth right unto man, but the end thereof is destruction". All things and people are not equal, rightfully so.

That said, there are moral aspects of Government 'caring' for the weak in our Society that are both morally legit, and practically applicable. And in our near future, after jumping the 'hurdle'. Qualified Subsidization...just like Jesus' qualified Mercy. The Powerful can offer it...but the Weak must pledge to fulfill their part, lest the moral legitimacy of the (social) contract fail.

TV stations (all three) were fairly straight forward with slight left bias.

Newspapers opinion pages are where you got propaganda

It's all national inquirer level now

I noticed a big shift left after the first Gulf War when CNN had about 100 anchors in the middle of Iraq. Then 9/11 gave us the massive "Breaking News" banners and scrolls on the screens 24/7.

Cable news has always had a political slant, even if minor back in the early days. However, the slant didn't really seem to be a problem like news shows of today. Mostly because it wasn't 24/7 in your face with petty things we now call news. We The People only got "significant" news in small spurts at certain times of the the day.

Old TV (early 70's) was rather simple... 3 or 4 channels (pre-cable). Local news at 5pm (Central), National news at 6pm, and local news again at 10pm. Then Johnny Carson for an hour... and finally a sign-off with the National Anthem and waving American flag at midnight ( YouTube)

In the morning around 5am you'd see an outdoor fishing show, a cooking show (e.g. Justin Wilson), then a run of Captain Kangaroo, Romper Room, Sesame Street, and a host of other childrens shows before the morning game shows kicked in (Price Is Right, Hollywood Squares, etc.). Around lunch the Soap Operas started their daily runs. Late afternoon included re-runs from the 60's (Munsters, Gilligan's Island, Rifleman, etc.). Then back to 5pm local news.

When I think of MAGA... I think of those simpler times. A time when America was less busy and with less invasion in everyone's personal business (internet).
