While Michigan St rarely utilizes zone defense, LSU must be prepared for it considering their struggles against Maryland.

I think the best way would be to put Javonte at the FT line to allow him to distribute from the inside out. He has the ability to finish over bigger defenders when attacking the rim. He sometimes gets tunnel vision and is vulnerable to charges while attacking so he must be aware that his job is to be a distributor

So your plan is to put a point guard at the free throw line to beat the zone?

Even though Michigan rarely uses zone, neither did Maryland. That said, I actually think going to a 4-out look might be a different approach that allows us to spread the court and drive baseline more.

Passing and penetration are good ways to beat a zone, so we gotta throw the book at Mich St.

People are freaking out WAY too much about a zone defense. It really shows that most people are just watching March Madness, which is fine. LSU played against zone all season long. I would say at least half the games this season some type of zone was played against LSU

Smart seems to struggle in traffic with his passing.

MSU has only run zone on five possessions this year. They have 100% confidence in their man to man. Did UK or TN ever go to zone against us this year? Not sure?

we need to do something we haven't been great at all season: hit threes

You beat a zone by moving the ball and hitting open looks as the defense tries to transition. If you can't hit open looks, you've got problems against a zone.

I’m extremely happy to know that you have no part in LSU’s gameplan. According to your analysis, we’d lose by 20+

I would use Mays in the middle.

The best way to beat zone defense is to beat them back in transition and don't allow them to set up.

If you don't beat them back then you beat the zone by attacking the gaps. Waters can do this but it requires the two other guards to find the gaps on the wings with the big forward down low and the smaller forward up high on the key.

When Waters drives to a gap usually set up by a high screen the strong side guard needs to flow to space usually base line and be ready for a catch and shoot 3 or catch and drive to basket or catch and drive dish along the base line. But it's only effective if other teammates are active and flowing simultaneously to open space. The other teammates have got to work hard to space when a guard penetrates. No brains farts. When in doubt (and you are without the ball) flow to space. It's a beautiful thing when teams get in sync to defeat the zone.

You put Naz at the free throw line, PG at the top, you stack on one side with one guy at the wing and one in the corner so preferably Taylor in the corner and Mays at the wing. When Taylor cuts to draw the wing defender Mays replaces him in the corner for an open three. Then you have Days in then opposite corner to stretch the floor which leaves a driving lane.

If Naz was consistently stonger with the ball, he’d be PERFECT to break a down at the high post. He had a tendency to lose it though. Probably still our best option there. Heck you could almost put Mays there if the guys on the court make sense.

Actually you shouldn't set/place anybody at the free throw line but flash players from opposite side of the ball into that open area and have them catch and shoot (Reid, Days, Williams) or dish to a baseline cutter/kick out to 3 pt. shooter if the defense collapses on him.

1. Pray they don't use the zone
2. Throw up brick 3s if they use the zone
3. Keep it close until the last 30 seconds
4. ????
5. Profit

i noticed they started using Naz in the paint to create space for Smart to drive deeper into the paint. Naz would suck up the defense in the center and drive them towards the basket (without the ball) and that would open up the front half of the paint for smart to drive

Attack the zone to create OFF. Break it down, and cause defenders to move which will create space for jump shots and cuts to the basket. Attack, and attack some more.
