SUMMERSVILLE, Ga. — On Thursday, dozens of Chattooga high schoolers walked out of class in protest.

At issue is a recent change by the county school board from a 4-day week to a 5-day school week.

Video shared on Facebook shows students protesting on the school's athletic field.

We have a crew in Summersville gathering more information. Depend on us to update you as we learn more.

4-day school weeks are becoming a trend across the country, especially in rural areas.

According to the National Conference of State Legislators, 560 districts in 25 states have allowed some of their schools to move to this schedule.

Studies show the schedule is favored by teachers and staff. One main reason for the switch is saving money.

However, a study by the Education Commission of States found those savings only amount to 2.5 percent at most.

Overall, there is not enough research to determine if 4-day weeks are positive or negative overall.

Honestly if I went on 4-10s for any amount of time I’d never be able to go back either. These kids got a taste of the good life and don’t want to give it up.

I can’t imagine a 4 day week not being a positive at the high school level in rural areas

can't imagine having pulled a stunt like that when I was a child. My parents would have whipped my butt when I got home. Pro tip, kids, nobody cares what you think about the number of school days per week.

Savings is in bus travel, and a little in utilities. Staff is on salary, so 4, 5, 6 days, doesn't matter.

Pretty sure they don’t like the 4 day week and are protesting to return to 5 days a week.

No one reads the articles on here. It says they are protesting the return to a 5 day week

I like the way you can see the mountains in the background at their football field.

Based on academic performance in northeast Arkansas, I think it would be a good idea to expand to a 6 day week.

4 day work/school week should be the standard nationwide.

It’s only plant operators who are obsessed with working 80+ hours of their lives every week in order to afford that $70,000 jacked up truck they don’t need and that once a year Gulf Shores vacation.

Absolutely, and that's pretending that 40 hrs/week is still necessary. It's mind-blowing how we're still on a five day, 40 hour "standard" schedule damn near a century after switching to it.
