Haven’t seen any info about the doc, assuming it covers the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes. I’ll probably catch it tonight before bed. Anyone else find the case of Theranos interesting? It was all over the media as a life altering development, and it was a complete fraud. She did some pretty crazy shite to keep the charade going, and still has never admitted to anything to this day

I'm currently reading the book Bad Blood. I'm about half way thru. I'm going to hold off on this doc until I'm done with the book.

I kinda want to see it, but I read Bad Blood, so I’m afraid it’ll just rehash the book. If anyone hasn’t read it though, I would really recommend checking it out. The story is fricking nuts. Holmes is a complete sociopath.

Alex Gibney is an awesome documentary filmmaker. Even though I'm already familiar with the story, I'll definitely check it out.

There is also a good podcast about her out right now. Can’t remember the name though.

Was she really super smart, or bat shite crazy? Or both?
Her voice and mannerisms remind me a lot of Romy White.

I'm probably late to the party on this. I never followed the original fallout from this story.
Watching the doc I can't understand how she got any funding to begin with?? There are people who have actual working prototypes of products that have trouble getting funding.
Other than maybe reducing costs, I don't really see the problem they are solving for either. Why would people go to Walgreens to get blood work done vs doing at their PCP.

I would buy a product that would show me my bloodwork numbers if it were inexpensive. 100%.
You wouldn't? You don't care what your T is? Your blood sugar? Etc?
Joe Rogan advertises a product that sounds like this, but I forget the name.

What a kooky broad. The voice and turtlenecks just a bit much.

just read the fist line of the OP, immediately dialed it up on HBO
...not 10 seconds in, paused it, came back to this thread to post this, only to see someone else posted the same thing
it sounds like she's got one of those Darth Vader voice modulators on, I keep expecting her to tell me my ph levels are off and she is my father

I think it’s just something where she fooled one or two people and others followed. Her being a cute, young, girl probably played a part as well. And the fact that the company was supposed to do good things.
People like the Walton’s have crazy money so it’s a drop in the bucket for them. Just just felt they needed to get on the bandwagon because others were.
She wanted to be Steve Jobs so bad
I’ll watch the doc later but the podcast on it was great. Lots of good interviews with people from the company.... including the whistle blower.

Nice to see MC Hammer grab some royalties from this.

It reminds me of the voice Mira Sorvino does in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.
It's crazy to me that there are people who knew her when she was younger and say that's not how she used to talk.
In her interviews she very much reminds me of the a-hole who ran Fyre Fest.

She systematically targeted high profile VC’s whose expertise wasn’t in healthcare. She levered her relationships, in particular, with Draper and Ellison to prop her up. Draper is a legend in Silicon Valley, and Holmes cultivated a relationship with him from go. He is not, however, a healthcare guy. With the backing of a handful of guys like that, more and more people of incredible repute jumped on which just snowballed. She played a media desperate for a superstar female entrepreneur like a fiddle as well.
She probably would have never been able to pull that off had she been trying in Boston (the center of the healthcare VC community) where proper product due diligence would have been executed.
But SV is where you can find crazy dollars being thrown at marginal ideas right now, so that’s how it went.

When I saw the 60 Minutes story, I was convinced the Indian dude probed all of her orifices.
