My mom taught there for years and this does not surprise me after hearing the crap she said went on there.

I wonder if the bribes from parents to get their kids into the school will come to light with all of this. That is the worst kept secret in town.

Also, they've really ramped up the admission of elite athletes lately. That can't be completely legal.

I'd bet money that's why their football coach left. He saw this audit coming down the pipe and got out while he could.

And I don’t see any harm going on the trips. It’s the same as earning airline miles and then using them to go on a vacation. Travel creates rewards you go on trips with.

Jeezum. Everybody done lost their mind.

You cannot be fricking serious. A government employee accepting free gifts from a private company that he “chooses” to use as the sole source provider for a yearly event? That is literally one of the examples they use in those yearly Ethics training courses that all government employees take.

Well you would lose whatever you bet.

Mahaffey left because Wade Smith supported the team and Mckernan buying scholarships for athletes. Smith retired and the school was looking to cut back significantly on that

Exactly.

Now, what if it can be proven that company was the cheapest and best at their job? Meaning, they were selected on their merits and they just happened to give out a perk to the customer.

(that is the follow up question to this scenario in Ethics class)

Yep, we aren't even allowed to accept people purchasing our meals if they are over like $35. Accepting free vacations is a HUGE violation of ethics for a government employee.

Usually that involves YOUR travel, though. It would be like the company CEO taking all the airline miles from all the employees and using them for his own personal use. It may or may not be illegal but it's shady as hell.

Now, what say you about the charge that they diverted after-school tuition money into personal accounts?

Does not matter. The "appearance of impropriety" is as damaging as actual impropriety. And this looks really, really bad.

Any benefit would have to go to the school, government employees cannot accept the gifts with the exception of gifts that are deemed not of great monetary value. Federal is like up to $20 a gift up to $50 a year. Basically so you can take that worthless convention junk home. There is no debate to this, this is absolutely a termination offense. Don't like the rules, go work private sector where you can accept gifts.
