uh, so the cops can swab this 38 year old, send it in as a normal request for a DNA match. Ancestry sends the results pinpointing who the likely mom is, and voila! How is that NOT opening up their database to the cops, without a warrant?
Did you read the article?
They worked with a company that assists with DNA evidence on cold case files. They were able to get some additional information using the DNA evidence from the killed boy. Then went through the suspected trash to collect dna swabs. Then got a search warrant to swab her mouth and confirmed the match.
They didn’t run a query trough their database.

If you served in the military at any point since 1980, uncle Sam already has your DNA.

thinking "I don't have anything to hide, I'm not a criminal," It's a short step to this being shared with insurance companies and prospective employers. Insurers would love to screen out people with genetic markers for expensive diseases. Ditto company HR departments. Think of the headaches they could save by eliminating job applicants with a susceptibility to alcoholism.
That would probably fall under some sort of discrimination does it not?
So besides this conspiracy theory, what else is law enforcement going to do with your DNA of someone they don’t care about?

Ethan Hawke still found ways around that in Gattaca so it's not that big a deal.

It's OK baw. You can admit that you came in, guns blazing, but never bothered to read the article.
I still upvoted you because the Hypothetical BS was creative.

Never understood why people willingly sent their DNA to these companies thinking that LE would never try to access that data
I’m not so sure it’s not just all a huge front for a government dna database.
