Sources: The Pelicans process to hire a new general manager is expected to ramp up next week.
A search firm has been parsing out candidates and is expected to provide ownership a list of 5-10 names next week.
From there, they can conduct interviews, pick finalists.

I think it'll all just be how the titles shake out. Whether it's GM/Assistant GM or POBO/GM, the top guy is supposed to report directly to Gayle. And that's what matters here.

In the Pels press release Gayle stayed:
“This will include a comprehensive, but confidential, search aided by outside consultants to identify a new leader of our basketball operations, directly reporting to me.”
So they are looking for a leader of basketball operations. Sounds like the title will depend on the hire and what their plan is I imagine.

President of Basketball Operations.
Generally a position above the GM.

Thanks. I know the position, didnt get the acronym.
Which GM candidates do y'all think would want both positions and how has that worked out historically? I know being a coach and GM or coach and President doesn't usually work out, but how about President and GM?

2 candidates that probably want to be POBO/GMs are Zarren and Griffin. I don't know enough about them to say what kind of #2 I'd like to see but whoever is hired we should see a serious commitment to scouting, analytics and sports medicine/science. If we don't see an expansion in those areas then not much has changed.
When Demps got here the first thing he did was replace Jeff Bower's YouTube Bookmarks and Synergy Sports subscription with an actual scouting department. Obviously that wasn't properly utilized with Demps trading away all of the draft picks, but it was a very tangible change at the time. Hopefully we'll see some similarly tangible changes in modern NBA directions after the new GM is hired.

Good news.
Im worried though, that it seems more and more like keeping Gentry might be part of what the next GM is handcuffed with.
To me this is an awful way to start the interview process, and should be a huge red flag to any candidate.
I personally think Gentry's a mediocre a coach, but even if i'd loved the job he's done here, i'd think it would be a bad look for the next guy running the franchise to not be able to pick his own coach.

Is Gayle hiring a POBO and a GM or just the latter?

That’s a semantic issue. She’s hiring someone to implement a new basketball ball operations structure. That person will presumably fill in the blanks but like most owners she’s got veto and mandate power if she wants to.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter. Masai Ujiri started off as a GM with no POBO, same with Tim Connely and others. A lot of times a FO will name a GM and then when they think an assistant GM is about to be poached (i.e. - Karnišovas in DEN), they change titles to POBO and name the assistant GM as the GM.
Actually this is what should have happened with Dell/Connely, but I digress.

I have heard explicitly that is not the case.

Griffin seems like the favorite here.

I think he meant the favorite on this board, but I don't really see that either. I think "change" is the favorite here. I kind of like the idea of Ferry/Langdon but I get how that would make people worry they took the easy way out and didn't implement enough change.
