We must have different definitions of impressive?

They were more inneficient back then I’d imagine.

Those pesky safety precautions and child labor laws

Actually a lot of these large parts are made overseas now, you would be surprised at the amount of large scale fabrication facilities in countries like Korea, Mexico, UAE etc.
I’ve been a part of building several units on pants along the gulf coast and the majority of the large process equipment is coming from over seas.

Miniaturization, digitization, China, modularizatoin, robots, and more efficient processes has taken away a lot of the demand for what you are referring to. However, I spend a lot of time in machine shops, refineries, chemical plants, foundries, etc. Don't let anyone tell you America doesn't make shite anymore. We're making a shitload of products every day. Basically as fast as we safely can.

A lot of folks looking at those pictures don’t realize that those are gun barrels and the turret bases of a WW 2 battleship. Look at the amount of steel in the decks and bulkheads around the turrets.

Many of the those pictures are the old 12, 14, and 16 inch naval gun foundries of the Washington Navy Yard. Most of the old foundries have been converted to office space (around the huge crane systems). My office is in one of them.

Back then it was a privilege to work in a factory. Now everyone is scared to work in factories and think they're entitled to college degrees.

Some of those old factories will be humming again when the sex robot industry takes off.

And I bet if you shook hands with any of those factory workers in that first pic it would be like having a wrench tighten on your hand. Hard dudes!

I love how random threads flush out serial O-T lurkers-
This poster averages around 8 posts per YEAR.
Think how nice the O-T would be if OweO and/or DavidTheGnome had similar posting levels.

4th pic is a battleship under construction in a shipyard.
The process is more modular for giant ships now, but it looks pretty much the same as it did back then.

Is there even a lathe left in this country that could shave down a column of steel into a 16 inch gun?

We have one sitting in our machine shop that could do it

Know a handful of contract hands that are building warships in Virginia right now. We still do produce a lot of our own military hardware. They just dont let the factory workers take pictures. All the baws I know had to sign NDAs to get on the project, taking pictures can get them thrown in jail.
