Film was kind of ahead of its time. You watch Paul and Strother Martin together and realize they could have made almost any sort of film - comedy, drama, epic, action, whatthefrickever, and it would have been awesome to watch those two together.
For the type of humor it was just so pitch perfect in casting, dialogue, tone, direction, all of it.

With no disrespect towards "Bull Durham", a great movie about minor league baseball, "Slap Shot" was possibly the greatest movie ever made about minor league sports.
Plus it has one of the greatest line readings of all time from Strother Martin (who not live that much longer after this role). "they came here to scout the Chiefs, the toughest team in the Federal League! Not this bunch of... pussies."

I remember first seeing that movie as a kid back in 1982, we had 20+ inches of snow, and were snowed in, so My dad told us we could stay up and watch the Sunday night movie, and it was slap shot.
Absolutely loved it then, and will still watch it.
It would not hold up today, the SJW's would be all over this movie.
