Let me make a flow chart for you:

Does your jersey deserve to be retired? Yes
Did you graduate from LSU? If yes, congrats, we’ll retire it; if no, sorry.

Well-spoken response from him.

I get the sense that he knows he doesn't meet criteria (the degree), but clearly he would be honored by it.

He tries to play it off, but notice that he happens to recall "averaged 30.2 pts a game". Not "a bunch", not even "30", but "30.2".

I think if he gets on Wade's good side, this may happen. He was an elite player not too long ago, with highlights on the internet. That would help recruiting, I think.

Mahmoud, to this day, is the greatest college guard I have seen play the game. He was the combo guard before combo guards ruled the NBA. I have played against him (crushed me) and have talked to him twice. He was a good man of integrity then and is now who just so happens to practice a different faith and holds different political beliefs from many here. Truth is, many who slam Mahmoud are far more forgiving of others who have done and said some pretty fricked up shite.

And for frick's sake, Maravich did not graduate from LSU!

I wonder how many of you clowns who bring up Mahmoud and the flag fly the confederate battle flag.

Yes Chris Jackson’s jersey should be retired and hanging in the PMAC. Jackson owns the national freshman scoring record, not just here at LSU, if we want to build a history and culture we need to recognize and promote the great things and traditions that’ve happened here. Not only did Jackson break the freshman record he was an All-American both seasons here and 2x SEC POTY. How many of those have we had here? Only one other power 5 player has averaged over 30ppg in the last 30 years and that was the Big Dog from Purdue, Glen Robinson, but Robinson’s career average can’t even touch CJs (29ppg to 27.5ppg). It’s time to celebrate one of the 3/4 best players in LSU basketball history.

The fact that his jersey isn’t already retired is sad. Honor the guy. He earned it.

Found this previous post on TD. Should Todd Walker's Jersey be retired?
LINK /

Interesting read. Quick, without clicking the link, what do you think the general consensus was? I bet you can guess correctly! Remarkably there wasn't the painfully coded language when it came to his discussion. And let's be honest...Todd Walker was great, but no better at his sport than Chris Jackson was at his. And if you take time to read the posts you'll see that graduation is NOT a prerequisite to getting your jersey retired. "To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination. Athletes must have demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, exceeding and in addition to all criteria used for Hall of Fame selection. The athletic performance must be considered unique, such as winning of a Heisman Trophy or National Player of the Year award, and should be based on the total LSU career. Athletes may also be considered for making dramatic impact on the popularity of his or her sport or for significant participation in positive change in LSU Athletics. Nominees must have a unanimous vote of support from the Hall of Fame committee". LSUsports.net

So now...all you posters who were so upset at the mere thought of the retiring of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf's jersey on the grounds he didn't graduate and had the audacity to go make millions of dollars after he was drafted, please also post your disdain that LSU would dare sully their academic reputation by retiring Todd Walker's jersey too.

I'm sure they could give him some kind of honorary degree that would get around the requirement.

Retire any worthy Number, so long as it reflects with great Honor on the reputation of the University.

It's often a very tough call. For example, what if a Retired Number personality is convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude later in life? Take the Number from the Roll of the Retired?

Graduation has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with the fact that he converted to Islam(and proud of it) and changed his name to funny Arabic name.

They should hang his jersey in the rafters but not “retire” it, kind of like football does with the stadium ring of honor. And can still say you have to graduate to retire it. Especially since Pete never graduated.

These days, nobody of that elite level is going to stay 4 years and graduate, not should they.

But guys like Ben Simmons , shaq, CJ, would help with recruiting to see those big nba names hanging from the rafters when recruits come visit, regardless of how long they stayed here.

a) is that the union ballroom? What was going on there?

b) no on jersey retirement unless he graduates. I was always on his side during his controversies, but retired jerseys are for graduates and people the building is named after.

I wonder what the breakdown is for:
1. Alumni who vote “nay”
2. Alumni who vote “yea”
3. Non-alumni who vote “nay”
4. Non-alumni who vote “yea”

I’m gonna guess that 1>2 and 4>3.

I loved that dude.
Attended the UF-LSU game when he scored 53.

They'll never be another CJ and regardless of his choice of religion, we should all just enjoy the great memories of watching him play in the purple and gold.

I'm ok with it as long as the jersey has Jackson on the back and not Rauf
