Can I legally fish with goldfish on limb lines on the rivers in Louisiana?

Update** Talked to Stg Armstrong with LDWLF today. He is not the original one who supposedly told my friend it was illegal but he was who they put me through to. He had to do some research and call me back. He said he found no laws saying fishing with goldfish was illegal in Louisiana. He also said he read the article written by retired warden Keith LaCaze and agrees with him. Basically there is No regulation that says you can’t,,,so you can.

Fishing with goldfish is not illegal in Louisiana!

Never bought “goldfish” but I use carp/buffalo regularly when the river stage goes down.

I’m sure it’s legal

No idea if it's legal or not, but why would you even want to risk introducing a non-native species into Louisiana's ecosystem?

Not uncommon,, all the bait shops sell them around here. I say it’s not illegal buddy says it is and a game warden told him it was. But this article says otherwise.. I’m going to call the said green jeans tomorrow. LINKhttps://www.louisianasportsman.com/fishing/fishing-facts-vs-fiction/

Ah. Didn't realize that. Always just figured it was one of those things people talk about but never actually do.

According to LDWF, Legal baitfish (to catch catfish) include: minnows, crawfish and shrimp (does not include game fish).
Not sure if Goldfish falls under minnows or not.

nope, very illegal

its an invasive species that if it gets lose will overpopulate natural areas and hurt local fish.

you get caught its a serious violation they dont play around with

Some people so strongly believed it to be true that they would hotly disagree when told fishing with goldfish was not illegal. To those I simply handed a fishing regulations booklet and asked them to please find the goldfish ban for me, since none of us on the job could.

I’m still waiting.

I believe you cannot release them, but there is nothing that states you can't fish with them. In fact, when carp are mentioned under the species that are illegal to possess, sell, or transport, goldfish are specifically excepted from that regulation.

Illegal. “They can get loose, breed and harm the system”.

What bait shops sell are gold minnows. They are not goldfish like one buys at pet stores. The bait shops on Lake Lorto sell them.

my dad grew up in louisiana and said at one point in time they were legal but LDWF outlawed them due to overpopulation concerns. I remember being at an old time bait shop in east texas and they sold them in the early 90/late 80's.

I don't think goldfish will live long enough to reproduce in the waters in South La. It would be too easy of a target for bass, sacalait, catfish, etc.

You would be surprised at nature’s will to live. I always heard it was illegal. No idea but I know enough working in pet shops and keeping fish most my life that I would choose not to use regular commet type gold fish for bait.

Perfectly legal and used them for decades and have been checked by green jeans more than once while using them as bait. Most good bait shops sell them. You can tell those that have never used them over perch have comments about it. But once you use gold fish you'll never go back to perch. No problems at all.
