It varies immensely from MSY. If you're a little more flexible you could probably cut costs booking 2 separate flights.

Some great information below, but no one has asked where you are looking to go in Europe?
Cheapest is also a nebulous term when it comes to travel. Are you looking for the absolute bare minimum flight and it doesnt matter where you go? If so, go on google flights and play around with dates and locations til you find one that strikes all your chords.
But just be cautioned that if your goal is to say go to Paris and you find a cheap way to fly into Madrid and take a flight or train to Paris, the time/inconvenience of it all might make it "cheaper" to just fly into Paris.

Op figure out your trip first. You have London, Paris, Amsterdam, frankfurt, Munich, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, Dublin, etc. that would all likely be cheapest to fly directly into than to fly somewhere else and get there.
Set a flight tracker on google flights. You can likely get sub $800 flights into many of those depending on where you are flying out of.
