For the past two weeks, My wife and I have been trying to figure out why our 5 year old female Rottweiler (indoors pet) has been cutting up and barking late at night. It gets so bad that she’ll wake us up and everytime I’ve gone out in the backyard to investigate, I’ve never seen anything out of the ordinary. We thought it might have been a raccoon or possum going across our yard that was setting her off, but that wasn’t the case. An hour ago I let her out to do her business, heard a commotion coming from the backyard, walked outside and found that she had killed a stray momma cat back by our small greenhouse that hasn’t been used in quite a while. I got the dog away from the cat and that’s when I heard cries coming from the inside of the greenhouse. frick!!!! I found four kittens probably a week old.

I feel terrible to say the least, but now I’ve got to do something with the kittens. Either I pack them up and take them to the animal shelter or nurse them till they old enough to give away. I guess the first thing I should ask, what do I feed these kittens? I think regular milk will upset their stomach? Need some advice, I have no experience with this.

If you’re going to nurse them you need to go to the pet store and buy the powdered kitten formula and a bottle. My wife nursed two kittens this way. It’s a lot of work. You’ll have to take baby wipes and rub their arse/genitals to get them to poop/pee.

Call your vet too and get their recommendations

Milk?

Start networking immediately to find them homes.
If you have a no kill shelter near you, take them there.

You should call your vet... Not only for advice regarding the kittens. They may need to examine your dog, and the mother cat may have a microchip.

Pet Smart or Petco should have milk in cans or powder to feed them.

Aww. If you go to any pet store (or even Walmart), they sell cans of kitten replacement milk (baby formula for cats) and little bottles.

Try googling cat rescues in your area & contact a few. Kittens are high maintenance to foster when they need to be bottle fed. You have to use a towel or something to rub their bottoms to get them to pee/poo (they won’t on their own til they’re a little older), and require very regular feeding. It’s kind of you to consider, but it’s more involved than it initially seems.

Are their eyes open yet?

This. Or else you're going to end up with 4 new cats.

There's a powder to mix up for the kittens to drink. From experience they never really liked it and I moved on to kitten food fairly quickly. Moist kitten food they really like

PS don't just take them to the pound, they'll just euthanize them. Try to find a foster family in your area that can help out, if you're unwilling to help out yourself.
Strangely from my experience, kittens that have had this occurred have turned out to be the best, docile cats
