Why don’t we claim the 1908 National Championship?

The Tigers were coached by Edgar Wingard and posted a perfect 10–0 record, outscoring opponents 442 to 11. The team played its home games at State Field and competed as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA).

The season was clouded by accusations of professionalism by Grantland Rice and rival school Tulane. Rice claimed V. Smith, C. Smith, Seip, Fenton, Lally, and Gandy were all paid salaries to play football, and that Clarke was a former All-Western player. Amidst fears of many players being ineligible under SIAA rules, most sportswriters instead gave the Southern title to Auburn, and left LSU players off their All-Southern team. A subsequent SIAA investigation cleared LSU of any wrongdoing, but since many publications voted for the SIAA champion prior to the conclusion of the investigation, they did not recognize LSU's title.

The Tigers have been recognized as a co-national champion by the National Championship Foundation, and the NCAA recognizes LSU as national champion for that season along with Penn. However, LSU does not officially recognize this season as a national championship season.

Pretty crazy not to claim it, it’s a rare air to have a university have 4 national titles in football. Would help open a recruits eyes

They should have claimed it while the men on that team were still alive.

Was that the year that opponents included the YMCA and NOLA Gymnastics Club?

Championships during segregation are lame just because it wasn’t a true test of best vs best.

How about write Joe Alleva or something one else that can push this through.

The soldiers at Jackson Barracks made the only touchdown scored all season on the Tigers, when their halfback Culligan picked up a fumble and ran it back 105 yards.
So the only TD allowed all season was by the offense
TDs were only 5 pts back then (FGs were 4 points) LSU was up 48-0 before the TD and the game ended 81-5

I posted this a couple of weeks ago, and it was widely downvoted. I'm sure it will be again, but here goes.
We should NOT claim 1908 because:
1) Retroactive championships are complete bullshite. Just because Alabama and Michigan do it, doesn't mean we should, too.
2) The Ivy League was the powerhouse conference back then. The SIAA (predecessor to the SEC) was considered a very weak conference.
3) No one alive at the time believed LSU was better than Penn or Harvard. That would be like saying UCF was better than Alabama in 2017 because UCF was undefeated and Alabama wasn't.
4) Kansas was also unbeaten and untied in 1908. Should they claim it, too?

I have been going to games since the 70s and the 1908 flag always flew with the 58 and then in this century it disappeared

It’s a shame LSU fails to honor the 1908 national championship team
