I'm definitely in for this season. You can really tell they are going back to their roots in all the good ways from season 1, especially the eerie AF music. Kind of wish they would bring back some Lovecraftian elements, but I can appreciate a lot of that being the product of Rust's mind and a bunch of cajuns on that crystal/LSD combo. I think Hayes' memory issues will give us some good stuff. Glad to see Pizzolatto throw some life philosophy back into the characters(especially the 'Nam vet trash collector talking about being in a place you couldnt't leave, but couldn't stay). Still dissecting the episodes but I like where it's going.
Curious about the girl, I'm wondering if it isn't an Elizabeth Smart type of situation except more fricked up, or if a guy who could be her real father decided to kidnap her. The mother was fricking around when Tom was working offshore so maybe one/both of the kids weren't his.
Really like Mahershala's character so far. Seems like hes a bad mofo from his LRRP days in Vietnam, but he's clearly experienced some shite, maybe even partly the reason for his memory issues if he was exposed to anything
Oh yeah, Carmen Ejogo is fine too, and she's 45. Found out she's Jeffrey Wright's(Bernard from WW) ex-ole lady

Looked like Wayne poured one out for Steve McQueen when they were shooting rats at the dump

Some interesting finds in IMDB for casting.
The boy who the teacher found on the playground who said he went trick or treating with Julie and Will... His character is named Mike ardoin. There is also a grown man around 45 years of age in real life listed as a character named Mike ardoin. Likely gonna see that character grown up in the 2015 time-line... There is also a young girl with the character name Lucy ardoin who must be his daughter....hmmm.
There are also a lot of state police characters listen in the database so I'm guessing the 1990 time-line is gonna be full. Of a lot of those people.
And file this under the crackpot theory... I have hunch the fat neighbor lady who was seen waiving at the kids in their bikes and then later comforting the mother of the missing kids... The actress has quite an underrated resume even though no speaking part as of yet...

Really enjoyed the first two episodes last night. Random thoughts I had:
-Were the teenagers playing with Will or Julie's bike that night while getting drunk at the Ranger tower? Is that where Ali found it after that kid threw it down?
-When the film crew mentioned the wife's book to Ali the first time I got the impression that the book didn't paint him in a good light for some reason. Ali made some comment about how good of a job she did that stuck out to me.
-I'm not convinced the daughter in LA is dead but think Ali maybe did something on the first or second time through the case that split them apart. Maybe something to do with the wife's book.
-I thought they handled the underlying race stuff pretty well. The first couple of mentions had me wondering if that was going to become some huge theme throughout the show but I thought the scene between Ali and Dorff blatantly addressing it was telling. I'm sure it will be a reoccuring theme but I think the war veteran stuff is gonna be more impactful on the characters.
-Love that they got back to the gritty setting, music, cinematography, etc.
Can't wait for next Sunday!

My Gf and I had the same thought! It's not uncommon for people who commit, or are a part of, crimes like that to try and get close to the family to learn as much as possible about how the investigation is going.

I think it'll be more than an underlying theme. The look Tom gave Hays when he put his hand on his shoulder to console him in the first episode spoke volumes about race relations in the town.

here's a random thought:
peep hole was drilled from Julie's room looking into Will's room

But wouldn't that just be looking directly into the opposite closet wall?

I'm thinking the mayor-turned-attorney general will play into this.

Really getting s1 vibes from these first two episodes. Probably gonna binge watch watch s1 again today and tomorrow because it was just too good.

I hope the wife is not involved. What a hack job of writing that would be.
I don’t think she’s involved in the murder/kidnapping, I think she just saw an opportunity to write her book, and what better way than to have a relationship with the lead detective...

Kids tell the dad they are going to playground, dad tells cops they were going to friends house. Probably nothing just found it strange.

My hunch is that this season won’t go as out there with the weird conspiracy stuff and is going to push the envelope more with storytelling technique and themes around memory and experience with the multiple timelines.
I may be wrong, and the dolls are indicating as much, but I don’t see some insane Carcosa mindfrick with all the infinite possibilities and insane speculation that we saw in Season 1. Which, I think, is ultimately a good thing. Much of our disappointment with season 1 was the letdown of the reality of the narrative vs the fantasy buildup we had all created.

That lady was a little late to take down her Halloween decorations too which I found a little odd. Maybe she was the one handing out the dolls.

The tower is on a hill/ridge, the bike Ali found was in a creek bottom.
