Didn't see that coming.

Bungie and Activision are splitting up, an industry-shaking divorce that will see Destiny enter fully into Bungie’s control.

This development comes after years of tension between the two companies—tension that has existed since before the first Destiny even shipped. Bungie told employees during a team meeting this afternoon, framing it as fantastic news for a studio that has long grown sick of dealing with its publisher.

“We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny,” Bungie said in a blog post today. “Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.”

Destiny, which first launched in September 2014, has had a long and rocky road through expansions, updates, and a sequel. The most recent major entry in the franchise, Destiny 2: Forsaken, was beloved by players but failed to meet Activision’s sales standards.

Good. I've played the hell out of both Destiny 1 and 2 but it always seemed like Activision was way too corporate

Jason Schreier:

from November

There have been tensions between Bungie and Activision since before Destiny 1 even shipped. With Bungie (wisely) wanting to prioritize hardcore players and Activision unhappy with sales, I continue to wonder about that relationship, and the future of Destiny...

today

This has been coming for *years*. Activision and Bungie have had a rocky relationship since before Destiny 1 even shipped. It's also incredible news for those of us who love Destiny and want to see it thrive.

quote:

At today's meeting announcing the news, Bungie staff cheered loudly. Can't over-emphasize how happy they are not just to get away from Activision, but to have a game that they now own completely. Imagine a Destiny free from Activision's restrictive annualized schedule!

quote:

Important to note: Bungie cheered pretty loudly in 2007 when they split from Microsoft, too. Activision is an easy scapegoat, but Bungie has made plenty of its own mistakes on Destiny!

Of course Bungie has made mistakes. I just never understood why the company that created Halo would need a co publisher to create their own game.

This was pretty well known back when I was playing D1. I believe it was kotaku who did a pretty in depth story on it.

The original scope of Destiny was much larger than Halo. They weren't ready for that I imagine.

Right, I just imagined their studio would be big enough to do their own thing at that point. Halo was a global phenomenon.

Current Bungie is not the same Bungie from years ago.

I mean, Destiny still feels like a Halo game. Bungie isn't like Rare who can barely make games anymore.

I just don't like the pseudo-MMO aspects of the game.
