India Culture and their Left Hand

So I learned recently that some Asian cultures, especially in parts of India, use their left hand to wipe without any toilet paper. You can google it and learn more but since I don’t know any Indians well enough to ask I thought I’d see if anyone had any stories behind this.

You’re just now discovering this?

do they user their right hand to see if the need to use the left hand again?

You found this out by shaking hands, didn't you?

India uses a lot of squat toilets and they cannot flush toilet paper. Thus using a bare hand and water

Clark, you’ve fallen off the roof one too many times.

When I was working in the office there was this Indian guy who did some weird shite at the bathroom sink every time he went in.
He would wash his arms up to the elbows, I always wondered what he was doing.
Now I know, nasty arse

Whenever the scammers call I ask them if they really use their hand to wipe their arse. They get mad.

Everyone in the middle East does this too.

not sure what age has to do with it. i'm a little over 16 and i never paid any attention to how other people wiped their asses.

I am 39 and just learned a few years that some Americans stand up to wipe. So I did research and found out 30% of the population did it. This still amazes me.

Cut off the right hand = ostracized

Yes. They're called children.

About eight years ago I went into the bathroom at a WalMart to take a piss. When I was finished I was washing my hands and some Indian guy came out of a stall with his hand covered in shite. I didn't know that it was part of their culture at the time to use their hand. I'll never go to an Indian restaurant, besides I hate curry. Go eat at A Taste of India restaurant and I bet that you'll experience a taste that you never experienced before. BTW, that Indian guy started to wash his hands as I was leaving.

Did you both exchange pleasantries?

So...I’m left handed...and used to work in India. I had no idea, but the OP is absolutely correct. At the first formal dinner I attended- they eat off of a banana leaf with their hands- the room got awkwardly silent. All of my customers looking at me. All of them. In a big fancy conference room. Staring. Then, I asked- “what?” One guy said “ummmm...you eating with the hand you wipe your arse with”
