If it is effective at keeping people out, wouldn’t you assume that it’d be equally effective at keeping people in? Why would any American want to empower their gov’t with the ability to prevent them from leaving the country?

What fricknuts? The wall doesnt circle the whole country! We have water between us and other countries/continents, that hasnt stop us from leaving.

Maybe the dumbest thought in this thread

Know what an even bigger waste of money is? Paying for these lowlives to stay here. How is it not a waste of money for many other countries to have walls along their border yet it is all of the sudden here? I’m tired of the losers from South America who are illiterate in their OWN frickING LANGUAGE coming here and being losers with their hands out.

frick that, I’d shut the goddamn government down until the wall was finished.

OP directs question to Democrats. Only conservatives reply. Infighting begins.

It would be an ecological mess.

No.animals could move north or south.

I'm not a democrat. I'm registered green.

I like dishing out jail terms for people who even accidentally hire an illegal, combined with the entertaining use of the patriot act. Disappear some people. Boogeyman is great deterrent.

Are you shocked that this is a conservative heavy board?

Furthermore, leftists don’t have a good answer for that question anyway.

Calling these muppets, "conservatives" is a stretch too far.

Because defense of the border is one of the few Constitutionally mandated duties of the federal government, Mr."conservative."

No. Just humored that the purpose of the post (i.e. to hear Democrats' arguments against the wall) seems lost.

Anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000 illegal immigrants cross the border every month. They use government services that you pay for. If you’re a conservative that believes in small government why wouldn’t you want us to pay for a wall? Do you want to eliminate border security completely? Fire all the border agents and tear down the fence? That would be a “cheaper” solution in your mind?

Jesus tittyfricking Christ! Did people really believe Mexico was going to write us a check? The new NAFTA deal alone covers the wall, and we haven’t even got into the 40% aid cuts, cartel assets, and wire taxes proposed earlier this year. Congress needs to do its job.

I think a wall makes sense in some areas, and no sense in others. A wall needs to be watched and manned in order to actual function, so a wall in populated areas makes sense. A wall with no roads and utilities within hundreds of miles makes no sense to me. The people who come across it will be able to go over or under or through it because there's nobody there to stop them or even see them do it. What's the point of that?

Not a registered Dem, but I’m generally left of center. I’m all for a wall. I’m guessing a lot of Dems may have been ok with the wall if it were never accompanied by all the “xenophobic” rhetoric. Basically if anyone other than Trump proposed it, it’s fine.

Wow. I don't like illegal immigration, but I can't support the state murdering people just to make a point.

I'm not a Democrat, but as I have explained in other threads, I am dead set against the wall.

I'm in favor of tighter border security, though. I just believe that can be attained much more effectively through other means -- more highly trained border patrol, increased surveillance, etc. Badicalky take the money people want to spend on the wall and instead spend that and more on something that will actually work.

The border fence was an economic and ecologic disaster, and did almost nothing to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into our country. The wall will be an even bigger disaster and no more effective.

It has become such a political symbol, though, that no one will try to listen to what the other side is saying.

Well yes, the IRS should also be abolished, but that is a separate issue

Correct. When you use something to gin up the xenophobes it starts to become symbolic of that.

Also it's a fricking waste of resources when border crossings are on the decline and the majority of illegals are overstaying visas.
