Lost in the TLL fumble talk

Is the fact that the Saints offense gained possession of the football with 8:51 left in the 4th and kept possession until less than 2 minutes remained in regulation. If that drives ends in points the narrative would be about how the Saints offense went on an amazing drive indicative of a championship team.

Final score should have been 19-9.

Why does a football look like a damn balloon in TLL's hands all the time? Dude is more of a midget than Cooks ever was and offers nothing to this team. He looks scared and takes horrible angles at punt returns too.

Even if he's tackled at the 1 yard line...
it becomes 1st & Goal and Drew kneels out the clock meaning the Saints took the ball over with 8:51 left in the game and don't give the ball back to CAR
that was such a great offensive drive and just a tough ending

it was a fantastic drive that got wasted. Happy we got the win but ugh.... that sucked so hard

Instead it's Exhibit A of Sean Payton trying to get too cute in a critical situation so he can be the smartest guy in the room and almost pissing away a shot at HFA.

Incredible drive.
I know some agree with the final playcall, and I don't want to criticize the coach who has us at 12-2 but I was literally screaming "did we just give the ball to f****** Tommy Lee Lewis?!"
It just doesn't make sense to me after you put together a drive like that, with the game on the line, to get cute and hand it to TLL. Give it Ingram, Kamara, or Drew 100/100 times

quote:That hindsight of knowing TLL was going to fumble the ball into the endzone for a touchback is really just something Payton should have anticipated.

Amazing some people are saying this.
Like you do realize the play worked, right? It was a good play call, you can't coach scared and anticipate someone is going to fumble. Blame TLL not Payton.

The play resulted in a touchback.
The play did not work.
Players are part of the play.

The play worked, the defense was beat

That was the perfect time to let Hill keep the ball or go wildcat with Kamara and live with the result.
You don't put the ball into the hands of people that are new to that situation.
Lewis did not have the first down and treated the 1st down or the goal line as the final result like it was 4th and goal and they had to score.
Even a failed attempt leaves you a great choice of going on 4th and inches or kicking the FG.
At that point I think going on 4th and inches was the better choice. You either score or you force the Panthers to go 65 yards for the tying FG with around 1:03 on the clock.

It may have worked if it was Kamara carrying the ball. Personnel and player execution is all part of a play. I don't understand how you say the defense was beat when they punched the ball out of Lewis' hands for a touchback.

A play can work and still not get the result you wanted. I guarantee the panthers are looking at that play in film study to see how they can fix how they covered it because they got beat.

The call was fine if Lewis doesn't fumble. If he just tucks it into his body instead of trying to be a hero and score the TD, it's at worst 4th and inches where a typical Brees leap and stretch ends the game and gets a first down.
Instead, Lewis does the unthinkable and fumbles it out of the back of the endzone.
Can't blame Payton there because at worst it should've run 45 more seconds off the clock and given the Saints a 6 point lead.

The ball should have been in Kamara's hands to win it, or secure it. Not TLL, who has hardly played this year and is way too undersized for that kind of play.

It might not have worked with Kamara since all eyes were on him.

Excellent point. Just like the DJ Moore play that resulted in a turnover for the Saints.

Exactly. Vonn made a great play, but we were beat bad on that play. DA will be looking hard at that play.
