it's at worst 4th and inches where a typical Brees leap and stretch ends the game and gets a first down.

Wasn’t it 4th down already? And luke destroyed brees on a sneak earlier that got called back for a false start.

Perfect play call, wrong personnel grouping. Handing the ball to T.Hill or Kamara instead of TLL would have resulted in a TD or at minimum a 1st down/4th&inches. T.Hill probably would have steamrolled that CB and absorbed the hit by the LBer while holding onto the ball. Now, its still a penalty on MT for holding and the ball is probably on the 12 yd line for 3rd and 11, but not a turnover.

I think everyone is overlooking that there was an offensive hold penalty declined. If he holds onto the ball, it's somewhere in the 3rd and 12 range, and the Saints kick the FG.

It was 3rd down not 4th. And yes, Brees got stuffed on a traditional QB sneak earlier, but that wasn't a play on its own that would basically seal the win. This was on top of the fact the one earlier was rushed and tried to catch them off guard.

The thing is without any timeouts, would Carolina have taken the penalty. Play ended at 1:44. Even if he goes out of bounds. Letting the Saints replay it at 3rd and 11, means you at best get less than a minute needed to score 6 instead of 3 again. Forcing the Saints into 4th and inches was their best shot if not for the fumble.

he caught a punt last night with his hands and nearly fricking fumbled it. You could see his angst after he caught it. Lucky.

You did see the flag that came flying in. I believe it would have been a holding call on Thomas, though I was too shocked to actually see what it was for. So, while I don't have a huge problem with the play call, I don't know that it worked.

You're wasting your time. Everybody thinks the play works exactly the same way if you put it in the hands of one of the players the defense expects to get it. No way they got the opening to the end zone because of any misdirection. Clearly Payton was getting cute . If only he was a good a coach as the folks here.

It was a great drive that we had to have.

Maybe the Saints can pick up the LSU OC and the play calling can be just a bit more calming for you

Final score should have been 19-9.

Actually it should have been 20-7. Brees is definitely kicking himself for throwing that ball on the 2 point conversion.

I must second the downvote for use of the word narrative.

It was a pretty weak call if it was on Thomas. He didn’t do much but get in the way.

There were a few weak holding calls last night. And apparently a wide receiver stiff-arming a cornerback is now unnecessary roughness.

WR is allowed to use an “open palm” on defender’s facemask. Not allowed to grab.

If that drives ends in points the narrative would be about how the Saints offense went on an amazing drive indicative of a championship team.

It WAS an amazing drive indicative of a championship team. Panthers made a good play in a tight window. Our defense makes us a complete team, however, and we got the win.

I’m ready to let TLL go. He’s a liability and doesn’t bring enough to the table to keep around. I’ve been harping that we should have let TLL go and brought Boston Scott up for kick/punt returns.

Problem with that-

Tommylee is a WR, the only one we currently have with speed. Thomas is getting doubled every play, Smith seems to have hit the wall, and Arnold has the hands of an OL. We really could use Tommylee the next few games.

Boston is a RB, a position he'd not see the field behind Ingram and Kamara. And he's more of a kick returner than a punt returner, again a position filled by Kamara right now.

I liked the call, hated that he fumbled it. If he doesn't fumble, I almost guarantee we'd see him on the jet sweep again, with Taysom at QB and Kamara at RB.
If they ran that and Hill can read what the defense is keying, it's either Hill vs a spread defense or Tommylee in a footrace with a LB to the edge; either way that's a win.

In other words “aside from that how was the play Mrs Lincoln ?

It was a great drive. EXACTLY what you want/need in that situation that was undermined by the head coach, who while brilliant sometimes gets to cute for his own good. Luckily the defense bailed him out but that was a stupid stupid call in that situation
