It's weird that when it comes to sports, America set up our pro-leagues as socialists structures and Europeans set theirs up very capitalists.

And many of the same Americans who claim to be pro freedom suddenly turn into devout socialists when this subject comes up. Weird huh?

It's humorous to me.

Based on current system there is no reason to pay college players beyond morality.

They cannot play for the NFL out of high school. That’s the NFLs rule.

There is no other league that will pay them.

They don’t have leverage to demand payment.

The problem is schools WANT to pay players.

They want to be able to use their resources to gain a competitive advantage.

Also there is an arguement that these schools are raking in Million and millions on the backs of these players, and maybe they should get a taste.

This is a stupid analogy. The draft only restricts where a player may play as long as they play in the NFL.

They are welcome to go join up an arena football team anywhere they like!

That is the residency system for physicians.

If you get placed in a program you didn’t want, tough shite.

If you refuse to go after signing up for the March (physician version of the draft), you essentially get blacklisted unless you have a sufficient reason.

Once your contract is completed, you can work wherever you want.

Pretty sure even the arena league and CFL have drafts

Wrong

If they used the physician residency system then Nick Bosa could play wherever he wanted. Mr. Irrelevant wouldn’t, but that would be a reflection only on the relative value of each player and not an imposed artificial contstraint on the players’ freedom.

I am a physician and went through it.

The match is the same as the draft in that you are told by a “cartel” that you have to go where you are assigned.

As with the NFL draft, they can go somewhere else once their residency (rookie) contract is complete.

Was the #1 person in your class told or did they have options? Go re read my post with the edit.

The concept of the draft is also completely fricked but that’s another discussion. I’ll ask you though how you’d feel if upon graduation a cartel told you you could be employed in Milwaukee and Milwaukee only?

They are getting paid. I don't know what school costs at OSU, but I'm assuming a scholarship for one year probably has a $30K or higher value to it.

You interview and you get to rank your programs, but at the end of the day, the programs pick you and you have no say or control beyond that.

If you end up at a program that you had at the bottom of your list and you hate it, tough shite.

You have to stay a minimum of 1 year or there are repercussions.

If you refuse to go, you essentially get blacklisted.

The only difference is that you get to rank where you want to go, but the schools rank who they want as well.

In the end, you are “forced” to go where they assign you.

I was lucky enough to get my #1 pick, but I know of many who didn’t and were very disappointed.

They went anyway.

The “residency cartel” owns your arse for at a minimum of 3 years.

ETA: And I see your edit. Yes, the better players would have a choice, but the point of being forced to attend where you are assigned, no matter how much you like it or not.

this.

Its illogical that the best undrafted players get to go to better situations than the late round draft picks

The NFL is a business and part of their product is parity. One of the tools they have implemented to achieve this is the draft. By the way, this wasn't a one sided decision imposed upon the players without their consent. The structure of the draft and the rules surrounding it are the result of CBAs between the NFL and the NFLPA. Hooray collective bargaining!

College kids know what they're getting into by choosing to pursue a career in professional football. If they don't like it, they can take their athleticism to another sport, or do something else entirely with their lives.

well yea. the incentive is the same as it is for MLB teams. you get players, put them in your system, let them learn your system of football and all that comes with it, and have them come out at 22 more ready for the game as they are specialized to play for your organization. plus im sure there are A LOT of people who would watch and pay for that, unlike minor league baseball

But the NFL is already getting all of that from college football without having to prop up a farm system.

And I’m skeptical of how many people would actually watch. NFL Europe, the XFL, the USFL didn’t draw enough eyeballs to keep them going. I know they weren’t farm teams but I’m just not convinced there would be that much interest, especially having to compete with CFB which isn’t going anywhere.

When did everyone forget that playing football is completely VOLUNTARY. No one is making these kids play the game.

Couldn't you say the same about every job?

And the suggested “fix” makes no economic sense either. Why does everyone need to get paid simply because a tiny handful of them are good enough to play professionally?

Probably because the sport generates millions upon millions in revenue each year

They are agreeing to play the game. The Draft is part of the rules of that game.

What fricking world do you people live in where you think every new swinging dick that walks into a work place gets to start dictating how the company is run?
