IMO what has hurt McNeese in the past 15-20 years is the emergence of programs like Lamar, SE LA, and Houston Baptist

the pool got thinner and thinner and they didnt get the studs they use to.

the fact that he was calling out fans for not attending was bs. Yes attendance was bad but no one wants to go watch you get your arse whipped by Lamar

Guidry can kick frickin rocks! The attendance this year was the highest it's been in his 3 years as head coach. They averaged almost 11k at home. Frick that whiny bullshite. Put a good product on the field that doesn't get outscored after the 1st quarter, and you won't have to worry about fans in the stands.

3 years ago when McNeese lost Viator to ULM they were pretty tight on cash, so they knew Guidry would take it with a hometown discount. They were in the middle of raising cash for a new basketball arena and the money was dry.

He then hired his buddies to help coach and they did it very cheap for 3 years. They made numerous mistakes on game management and play calling.

It was time. Lance is a great Cowboy, but it wasn't a good fit.

I just hope they can attract a young, smart coach to take them to the next level.

First call should be to Colby Carthel, the HC at Texas A&M-Commerce. He’s built a powerhouse there and won the d2 national championship last year. Great young coach with a great football mind and the organizational skills to match

McNeese may not ever get back the large crowds of the heyday. With the availability of LSU on tv, McNeese on tv several times a year, and in general people having plenty of other entertainment options, a strong mcneese is a tough enough sell, much less a struggling team.

It was time to replace Guidry though. Rebowe at Nicholls has surpassed us very quickly and everyone else was passing us by too.

who Lance?

he was the DC and basically #2 guy behind Viator (he'd speak at booster meetings when Viator was unavailable). he was a pretty good DC, too, and was supposed to be a good recruiter. most importantly, he accepted the absolutely terrible salary that the MSU coach gets. Viator was making slightly over $100k when he left

i don't think Lance is just a HC guy. he seems to rely on being a motivator more than a strategist (Which worked with Viator b/c he's a strategist with no personality)

You forgot the fact that he was in the good ole boy network.

McNeese needs to get serious, put some money together somehow, and go find a coach from outside the McNeese Circle of Friends.

That being said, I fully expect an internal hire or a high school coach, because McNeese doesn't have the money to pay a real coach. I hope they make me eat those words.

Cowboyfan89, you hit it on the head

Because they cant pay, they got the good ole boy network full of unqualified guys.

Lance has a lot of baggage that many wouldnt hire him on, but we had leverage and he took a discount.

Kerry Joseph is my favorite all time Cowboy, but i fear they will give him the job and he has no business being the head coach. He was already named interim.

They 100% need to go out of the network

yeah thats why a lot of fans are mad they didnt get rid of the AD.

The current guy does nothing to raise money or drum up support. He has to play the game.

No reason they cant pay $200-$250k a year

the year i was a booster as McNeese, i knew a bunch of those old guys who show up every Monday for the QB club have $ to donate

McNeese is just not cut throat enough. i think the Tate era and the Darrells controversy led to a decision that they'd rather be fully clean and sacrifice winning to feel good about it. this kind of means there is no reason to really donate to pay more for coaches.

*ETA: that 2nd sentence is me guessing. i don't actually know that's the mentality. just waht i interpreted from my year

Yeah its crazy to see fans online ripping the admin for getting rid of Guidry and saying "hes one of us" and should be given another shot.

when did we become ok with 6-5? Did people forget Bobby Keasler and Tate? You think they would be ok with 6-5?

I didnt know fans had gotten so soft. I cant believe they watched this team and thought that staff needed to come back.

If they can pay the new basketball coach $85,000 with the $25,000 extra on top of it, you are absolutely correct in they can pay the head football coach that much a year.

dude i'm telling you. the "big money" would rather go 6-6 with a squad they'd be happy allowing dating their granddaughter than go back to the days of recruiting guys with questionable character and winning more. they're developing that self-image like Michigan fans have (about "doing it the right way"). hell the McNeese boosters don't even like taking transfers or JUCOs if they can avoid it (they would ALWAYS bitch about SELU and ask ho many transfers played each week). they don't want mercs who play football. they want to build a McNeeese community

I’d thats the case then they can’t be surprised when the stadium is half full

I can remember going every Saturday in the 90s/early 2000s and the “buzz” around town and the field

MSU flags everywhere, RVs as far as you can see. It was truly a special place. Teams feared coming in there
