The full story is here

Guy starts a thread saying he and his wife want to buy their first house, preferably by the end of this year. in the best of circumstances right there.

He is 30 and makes $55k in Las Vegas with a HS diploma. Good FICO. His own situation isn't that bad actually. The fun begins with the wife.

His wife is 40. Works retail making $17/hr. Has $280k in student loans that's already in collections. She has two degrees - one in math and the other in ... Chinese herbal medicine.

Despite her previous educational problems, their plan is for her to attend nursing school and hope to get loan forgiveness down the road since it's a medical field.

But they want a house by the end of the year! She must give the very best blowjobs in history.

That’s bad but certainly not the most insane thing I’ve ever seen.

How can you have a math degree and not be able to crunch those numbers?

I feel like I’ve gone back to 2007

Edit: Scratch that, if this was 2007 they’d be moving into their new $500,000 home right now instead of asking reddit

This is like those house hunter shows where a couple is buying their first house in Scottsdale. He is third year local cop she is a first year kindergarten teacher and their budget is $1million dollars.

She sounds like the type that often throws out "well I do have 2 degrees".

Yeah...that won't happen. You don't get loan forgiveness just for being in the medical field.

Go look at Allen Iverson or Mike Tyson for TERRIBLE personal finances.

His wife doesn’t have to co-sign on the house, right? I’m really not sure on that but if his credit is good and a history of $55k/year, he could get approved for a loan with a decent down payment.

Unless you go to an Ivy League school or Cal Tech how can you have that much student debt?

I hate it say it but this situation genuinely makes me wish there was some sort of “degree viability” aspect to student lending. JFC this kind of behavior is going to cause the next financial crisis.

Yea this is how ive felt for some time about where this country is going. We will see another Freddie and Fannie situation in 10 years.
