Yeah. Some a-hole in Miami stole an old number of mine (didn't know it was possible). He made like a .65 cent purchase to see if the number was still active, then went to town. I had no way to check it. Bank called and cleared it up. I asked why the old number wasn't deactivated, and the rep said it was suppose to have been, but isn't uncommon for the bank to get lazy and not do it.

Yes

At the gas station in Port St. Joe. Used to be a sonoco, but now owned by Habib.

It only took them 6 hours to get my card info and have it on the web. Was trying to buy stuff from some asian gaming site.

they hit it with 10 .99 charges to see if it would work, then went with a 1K hit and that sent the alert. Was in Alabama driving back from Cape San blas when i got it. They shut it down, but it took me months to get it straightened out, i would be verbally abusing amex for being stupid.

I had a jack n the box charge me 27 times for 1 order, and i scolded amex for hours, telling them how the frick could 27 charges not send a red alert, especially the same charge.

I got taken care of, but i cant believe how slow and confused they are about what the easiest and fastest thing to do is.

I hadn't used the card yet, it was a new one, so it wasn't any other place that it got hit from.

My daily limit for cash at an atm was $800/day. Went to get cash out last week, and it said I had reached my daily limit. I hadn't gotten any cash that day, so of course I checked my account. No money had been withdrawn. Called the credit union and was told that due to the recent data breach, they reduced all customers to $500/day. This was the first I had heard of this. They weren't protecting me. Pretty sure they were a lot more concerned about their liability.

You'll get your money back just like a credit card. I've had fraud on both credit and debit cards and always got it back. Not sure what everyone here is talking about.

It seems to be a lose-lose for banks and card companies. If they cancel your card the minute a "red alert" comes across, and it ends up not being fraudulent, the card owner is going to be pissed that their card got canceled and they have to wait for a new one. If the opposite happens and they don't cancel a card/account as soon as something looks fishy, the card/account owner gets pissed the fraud wasn't stopped sooner.

What I don't get is it seems like surely there's a way for them to just freeze the card until they hear from you/can get in touch with you.. right? Seems unlikely the only option is canceling the entire thing.

I wasn't pissed as much about the internet dealio.

What pissed me off, was 27 charges from jack n the box, all the same amount, one after another and that not sending a red flag. After the 10th straight charge of $5.10 , it should of went into red flag time.

They freeze my credit card all the time when they suspect fraudulent activity. A couple weeks ago we were at dinner and my son bought some stuff on his Xbox which triggered them to freeze our card. Declined at Ruth Chris

Since the chip was implemented on my corporate accounts:

“Large quantities” of gasoline in Mexico City

Thousands of dollars worth of karate equipment in New York

Hundreds of dollars worth of comic books in Germany

Chase handles the charge backs with no problem but they cancel and replace my card every time which is an incredible pain in the arse.

I use a Debit Card because I like paying as I go. That said, I only keep a couple hundred on it, and then log in to my bank savings account and move money into the checking/debit account when I need to using my phone's app.

Yes. Close your card. Go to your nearest branch and print out the fraudulent charges and assuming you use a reputable bank and do it in a timely manner they’ll credit your charges back.

This I only keep 400 or so in my checking account and if I'm going to make a big purchase in a store I move money right before I check out.

All my online purchases are credit card only.
