You must be one of the NIMBY's along the eastern edge who have fought this in the past.

Most medium to large cities have some sort of large public green space (not just a golf course) near the city center. Baton Rouge is an outlier is this respect.

I'm not going to disagree with you, but for the average/casual golfer like myself it's hard to beat for getting a quick 9 holes in after work or late on the weekend.

I can't believe no one had posted about Harry Neese, or the bee hive by the pro shop's side door , or how the locals use to hide in the bamboo along the RR track and shoot at you with bee b b guns when you played number 7.

Backin the day when woods were woods and blades were blades; there were some tough holes made even tougher by less than ideal conditions. Three was fairly long and tight, five was a weird dog leg four with a green about as large as an above ground pool with two mounds in the middle, and 8 was a very long par three with a blind tee shot all uphill.

Then you had four, six, seven and nine which were unique hole in themselves. Starting off on a par three was also different.

They should have invested some big money and purchased more property around the park years ago. An 18 hole layout in that area could have been magnificent. The land is so different.

But vision and BR don't go together. We need to reinvent City Park, they already messed up the pool and the course, and do something better. Do that and cut a deal with LSU and make their course more available and help pay for the upkeep there.

That would be a win win solution.

Webb is decent. I mean, it's not a country club but more than satisfactory as a public course.

It's happened to me on #2. Hit one down the left side, dude jumped out from behind a tree, grabbed my ball, then tried to sell it back to me.

You have to finish this story. What did you do when he tried to sell your ball back to you?

Agree 100% with the OP.

Also with the public tennis facility which is top notch and which I go by every single night, it is put to great use.

Also City Park is set up perfectly in its current iteration for running and jogging.

With how various Baton Rouge city services and departments performs its duties and maintains things, I would be extremely hesitant to let them tear up something and change it when its working just fine and doing the entire public and state a great service.

Was a great layout

They started messing it up when they let them dump excavated dirt from the interstate construction under the trees along the fairways.
That was criminal.

When Al Michaels was in charge that course was run very well and was a good test of golf.

Yeah, closed, completely reconstructed into an actual park, and then opened again. Hasn't been an operating golf facility for over 2 years.

Like we need an “urban gathering place” in the middle of one of the nicest areas in town. We all know what would happen with that

I love that blind par 3, though.

Shut it down. Turn it into a Park. The place is terrible.

It's 9 holes. The course is definitely a goat ranch but where else can a non-country club kid learn the game without spending an arm and a leg? A $10 green fee doesn't equate to good greens or conditions but it is affordable for beginners and hackers. Plus you can play it in less than 2 hours and it's right in the middle of the city.

Webb
Dumas
Clark

All are cheap as hell. Also God forbid they use the practice area at LSU or Santa Maria from time to time.

How does br not have green space? The damn city is a forest

Downtown has green space
City park already has green space

Its a fun course, that isn't in bad condition. Fairways aren't great, but they've been doing really well with the greens. Way better than Clark or Dumas

And screw driving to those parts of town. I'll take my course city center thank you instead of driving to the outskirts of town. At least golfers are playing the course, but great, let's just make it an open field that no one will use and the few that do make it unsafe and litter the place.
I don't play Beaver Creek or santa Maria because I'm not spending $50 a round
And I don't see the argument of how this is stopping progress. Thats just ridiculous
Please explain that moronic comment
