I'll be out there in a week and a half for a long weekend. Suggestions on where to play other than TPC Scottsdale?
TIA
TIA

Troon north and the boulders are my two favorite out here so far

We did our annual golf trip out there last year so we researched a lot of different spots. We-ko-pa and AK Chin Southern Dunes are probably the best places to play if you don't mind the drive. We also played Dinosaur Mountain as a cheaper option. It has one really good 18 and another 18 that's just average. Troon North and Quintero also get good recommendations but we didn't play there. Quintero is a pretty good haul if I remember correctly.
Most of the locals will tell you that TPC Scottsdale is highly overrated and not worth the price.

Do you remember which one was the better one by chance? We are wanting to play Dinosaur Mountain because we heard the views are awesome.

I think the two 18s are called Dinosaur Mountain and Sidewinder, so the Dinosaur Mountain side is definitely the nicer of the two. The views are pretty incredible.
Also, you'll need to be careful about picking places to play without looking at the overseeding schedule. This time of year a lot of those courses will close down for 1-2 weeks to overseed. I wouldn't really recommend playing in the 2-3 day window before they close either because they start to let the course go before hand.

Played TPC Scottsdale and Troon North about 10 years ago and Troon was in far better shape. Both were great courses, obviously

Played wekopa, Quintero, camelback this past Labor Day weekend. All 3 where in great shape.
Played wekopa, troon north and eagle mountain last year. Can’t go wrong with any of these courses

I played TPC, Troon North and Grayhawk Talon. Troon was beautiful. My favorite of the three. They were all great, though.

I played the Phoenician when I was out there a few years ago.
Really well kept, some cool views (best one is right when you turn in there), and a good mix of desert holes with hard sand rough and normal holes with grass and lakes

Don’t play tpc.
Both WeKoPa courses are fantastic and no houses.
Eagle mtn is in the same area and is a more friendly course off the tee. Good views.
Can’t go wrong with Either Troon course or Boulders.
If willing to drive 1.5 hr then Wickenberg Ranch is phenomenal and Seven Canyons in Sedona will be unforgettable.
A bit lower tier, but still fun desert courses to check out would be Rancho Manana, Legend Trail or the Desert Ridge courses (Palmer better than Faldo).
Quintero has some pretty awesome holes, but last I played it the greens were really jacked up with a fungus or marks that made them bumpy and killed the round.
As stated before-make sure you check when they overseed. You’ll love the golf here.

Co-sign WeKoPa. Greyhawk was a nice course too.

You seem pretty knowledgeable on courses in the area, and I'll be in Scottsdale in April. Have any recs for courses that are a little more forgiving off the tee?

I feel like every hole at Westin Kierland was shaped like a bowl, so unless your drive went to the next fairway over it would end up getting funneled back towards the fairway

I think there’s always a balance in what type of golf you want to play. Obviously, the top end courses are mostly going to be more difficult, but are fair if you hit good shots.
One thing that is generally nice about these courses is that even if you are off the fairway the rough is typically not very penalizing as far as needing to club up etc bc the grass doesn’t grow as well. So you typically will have dirt/hardpan or rock type lies when out of play that you can occasionally play without a penalty.
Off the tee, Eagle mountain is a really fun course with elevations, good rolls and allows for pretty good margin of error. Talking Stick has two courses that are pretty wide open off the tee as well. As mentioned, Kierland is not overly difficult and is a resort course that’s always in good shape, but not as scenic IMO as the other two. A really fun track is Verde River and it’s not too bad off the tee.
Another two courses that are enjoyable but not as nice as the others (but likely cheaper also) are on the south side of town Legacy and Raven. Not bad off the tee at all, but the others courses will have better mtn views and memorable holes. Hope that helps.

Huge help, thanks for all the info. So far here is how we are thinking we are going to break it out:
Thursday- 36 holes, probably both 18’s at troon unless there is somewhere nearby we can squeeze in after a morning round out there.
Friday- Sunday will each be a round a day. Here are our top considerations right now. Let me know how you’d rank these.
- Eagle Mountain
-We-ko Pa (only one so let me know what y’all like)
-Quintero
-Grayhawk (only one round)
-Verde River
- Dinosaur Mountain
Any others I should definitely have on this list for mid tier consideration?

My pops and I were out there last year for the Final Four and played Las Colinas, McCormick Ranch Pine Course, and The Foothills Golf Club.
3 totally different courses in that area. Las Colinas was a pretty easy track that winds through a neighborhood. It was in pretty good shape overall, but was in the worse shape of these 3 tracks. McCormick Ranch is in Scottsdale and was really really nice when we played it. Pretty tough course too. Played the Foothills Golf Club on our last day before we flew out. Was more of a desert course than the other 2 in that there wasn't much rough, was either a house or dirt/cactus.

What are your handicaps? I’d skip Dinosaur out of those choices. Verde River is just 10 min down the road from Troon, so you’d be able to tie that into your 36 hole day unless you want to play both Troon courses (you won’t be disappointed). Verde will be cheaper than Troon and is a step down, but I still think its a great course with some wide open views. Easier than Troon.
I can make better recs once I know handicaps

Anyone played Papago Golf Course?

Our group ranges from a 7, granted he is the only single digit in our group(poor bastard stuck with us), and the rest all scattered to a high of around 20. Most of us shot mid to high 80's. All from Houston, so desert courses will definitely be giving us a harder test.
