Fwiw anyone that says changing spark plugs is always very easy is being ignorant. There are multiple cars with front wheel drive V6 or V8 where the back 3-4 cylinders are a pita to reach. No idea if that affects OP’s car or not, but it could be 2-3 hours of work for a spark plug change is all I’m saying.

Never liked going to that dealership. When I had a BMW in BR I took it to Wedge Keyes for any service or repairs.
Always did a good job at a fair price and with a quick turnaround. The only downside was they didn't have any loaner vehicles.
They used to have a coupon on their website for a flat percentage off your total. Not sure if they still have that.

For that little manual labor? C'mon. That's a ripoff of high order.
Beings as the OP hasn't even told us what kind of vehicle he allegedly has, we have no idea what kind of labor we are talking about. Hell, a spark plug change on say a 2007 Ford F150 with the 5.4 is 3 hours of labor book time, which dealerships charge by. And the plugs are going to be at minimum $10 each, and then any shop that knows what they are doing is going to insist on changing the coil boots when they do a tune up on that thing, so there's another $75 for those. So figure $100 an hour at a dealership, $300 labor, $80 for plugs and $75 for the coil boots and $450 just to change the plugs on an F150. And to anyone who would say it should not cost that much, I"d laugh at them and suggest they should do it themselves then.

I agree with that, front wheel drive vehicles are a bitch to access.

I have a F-150 and have changed my own spark plugs many times. The reason the dealership or shop is charging for 3 hours of labor is probably due to a 2 hour minimum labor cost.

Remember most people on this site haven't changed sparkplugs since putting 4 Splitfires in their Civic to get 10hp boost. They also coupled it with a K&N filter.
Engines aren't as simple as a chevy 350 any longer.

Correct, there are quite a few FWD cars that the only way to change the spark plugs on the rear bank is to pull the upper intake manifold . Cracks me up when people come into my dad's shop they have changed the front 3 plugs which takes about 10 minutes because athey are right there, and get pissed because he charges the full price for changing the rear three.

If it's German...Jeff will work on it and do a better job than the dealership. At 1/3rd the cost.
Yup. He's who I used for old BMWs. He marches to the beat o fhis own drummer, but he's legit at what he does and honest about it.

German dealerships are the worst at this. Its not completely their own fault. Their service intervals are so short and their requirements (from the factory) are excessive.
On my last BMW, the factory recommended replacing the brake pads, rotors, brake fluid, and wear sensors all at once ($1250). Even if the wear on the pads was only down to 50%. The dealership cannot go against the factory service specifications. I bought all the parts myself for about $400 and did it in my garage on a saturday.
I never allow the dealer to do non warranty work. I just can't justify the price. I do all of it in my garage and then use a local independent mechanic for the rest.
I still love German cars. However:
My best advice is don't own a german car unless you have shop skill or $$ money to burn.

They can recommend, but can't void a warranty due to you denying such work.
Just deny the work. Ask to take a look at the work they are recommending.
Treat the dealer just like you would and indy.

Exactly. Dealerships will tell you that anything and everything needs to be repaired and a job that would normally cost $500 can easily triple or more.

Any idea what the service costs are for high end Japanese vehicles?
I've always heard the German vehicles dealer service charges are outrageous.

That's actually sounds like fraud. It's called "Made Up Maintenance". Years ago big dealer group on the East coast had to settle a huge class action lawsuit.
They were telling their customer all kind of stuff was required to keep warranty coverage. What they recommended was not in the OEM's maintenance guide.
Get you owner's manual or maintenance guide out. See what's required at your time/mileage. Ask them for a quote of each one individually.
For sure plugs in all vehicles are 90 to 100K miles. Brake fluid replacement about 5 years.
LOF, engine and cabin filter about 250 tops at a high end store even with full synthetic oil.
I developed dealership factory scheduled service menus for 28 years. I think they are trying to take advantage of you straight out. I would call the OEM customer line.

No, the reason is that the Chilton's Labor Manual calls for 3 hours to do the job.
I doubt you can do the job much faster than that. Also, why have you changed the plugs many times? You should be using platinum plugs which can easily go 100K miles between changes unless you have other issues causing premature plug failure.

Why are you paying someone to change the cabin air filter?
They can't teach BMW drivers how to use a fricking turn signal. You think changing a filter is within the realm of their abilities?!

I’ve had two personal F-150s and one for work, between the 3 of them I’ve orobably put on about 500k miles.
