What is with this new trend of scaring kids for views? (an afternoon rant)

I guess I'll start by saying I'm not a parent, so feel free to tell me that I just don't get it, but what is with these parents doing these "challenges" that traumatize their kids? Jesus. Are they this desperate for internet fame?
The most recent is the "invisible kid" challenge which makes a kid thinks he or she is invisible (get it? because kids are stupid and super trusting of their parents) and, naturally, the kid loses his shite and freaks out and cries. Yay, views! Another is a parent putting on a mask and scaring their young child, sometimes a toddler, and chasing them around until they're crying uncontrollably. I don't get it. Is this funny? Is this entertainment? Why is this happening?
Also, when your kid is crying from being bullied, stop shoving a camera in his face and asking "why are you crying?" and then post it on Facebook to show why bullying is wrong. We know why bullying is wrong. That video is going to be on the internet forever, you a-hole. You're bullying your kid, too.

I'm a parent.....and yes I don't get it either. Morons trying to get 15 minutes of fame at the expense of a toddler.....pathetic.

I hope those kids remember this when it comes time to decide what nursing home to put the parents in.
I also hope the kids take note of the parents' burial instructions. And then do something else with their bodies.

even worse is if they're doing it to fuel their narcissism
that's borderline psychopath behavior

Seems pretty far over the border to me.

I NEVER put my kids on any form of stupid social media; that being said, when the boys were about 2 1/2 to 3, we would play "hide and seek," and I told them to close their eyes so that I couldn't see them. They believed it.
Whenever they closed their eyes I would say "where did you go? I can't find you!" Then they would open their eyes and I would say "There you are!"
ok, csb....but it was fun at the time.

well i think of narcissism like an addiction these days so it could just be that obsessive compulsive stuff you see with addicts

answered your own question. The same reason they post countless pics of that same kid doing everything from napping, to eating dinner and all the other stuff that literally every other kid on planet earth does.....for attention and likes.
This board likes to throw around the term mental illness a lot.... this is the kinda shite that qualifies IMO

Agreed. Most of those parents should be taken out back and beaten with a hose.

I dont video tape it but I do scare my oldest son on a semi regular basis. Keeps him on his toes. My Dad used to have prank wars with me, I'm just continuing the tradition.

Can we have some example links?

It's sick shite.
Maybe not quite as bad, but still really bad and fricked up is punishing your kid for doing something wrong (being a shithead at school, lying, etc) by publicly humiliating them and then posting it to Facebook to show what a "great" parent you are.
The best (worst) is when the kid is being punished for being a bully at school. His punishment is getting bullied by his parents.

What? No.
Kids at a certain age ENJOY being scared. I think in that tween stage.
My kids are constantly begging to be told scary stories. There’s an excitement in being scared.
Fear is a useful tool. I think scaring kids to teach a lesson can be effective. Or scaring them in good fun.
Now truly terrifying them for the gratification of others online? Kind of screwed up.

You mean like startle him, right? Not undermine his feelings of personal safety and security like the a-hole parents the OP mentioned.
I get that times have changed and we're in the age of social media, but I don't even think sharing your child's first poop on social media is okay. The purposeful video humiliation is approaching abusive.

Hold up now, fairytales are ancient and were designed to be terrifying for children to teach a lesson, to serve as a warning that death lurks on the edges.
Suggesting that fear is a bad thing is asinine. Fear keeps kids alive until they are old enough to understand and comprehend the real danger. Which is sometimes still monsters. Or worse.
