based on his statements, actions and confidence level, one of the things he has learned from his failures is to trust his own judgment of player talent. we see this in his recruiting - he has no hesitation in offering a 3 star at football camp if he likes what he sees.

O, based on his own judgment of his players, has confidence in this team and believes they will be good. not just the defense, but the offense as well.

we will find out about his football savvy this season. I hope to hell he's right!

I'm glad it took O apparently 40 years to gain one of the most important skills for a leader.

Every coach offers 3 stars.

O also offered 5 stars.

I believe O likes every player we gave a scholarship to. That doesn’t mean they we got our 24 top of the board players.

Also you seem to be misremembering Os failure he is supposed to be learning from.

Ah yes. It's funny, all of O's successes are always intangible.

I don't think there is a coach who hesitates to offer a 3 star if that particular coach likes what he sees.

This is so silly. We know about Orgeron's football savvy. Is 4 full seasons running his own program not enough evidence?

Why do people expect something to change? He's the same Orgeron.

Let me guess, "he knows he has to get it done this year so it'll be different."

He has literally, and I mean LITERALLY, no excuse. This is his football team, his coaches, executing his vision, and hes confident about it.

It it works, he deserves the credit. If it doesn't he deserves whats coming.

typical idiotic statement. Every coach in the country including the best coaches doubts themselves.

tigerfan, I agree with your statement, and it jibes with what i'm saying. he either has learned and will be successful, or he won't. the proof will be on the field this year, not the past.

I doubt any coach looks at Star Ratings. If they like what they see, they offer.

It just so happens that everybody can see just how good 4-5 star kids are.

Yep. I feel the same way. This is how I got over my initial anger about the Ensminger promotion.

So according to the OP, is O better than all other coaches?

Understanding one's judgement AND being a good judge in the first place so that you can put the right people around yourself is one of those traits successful leaders have. Second to that is how to develop those people.

Of course O doubts himself, of course we all do from time to time, that wasn't the point of the OP.

Coach O was in charge of recruiting for Pete Carroll and did a great job. One of the reasons Pete kept him when he was hired was that he was known as a very good recruiter and Pete had 0 experience.

And this is ultimately what you get when you don't hire based on the resume of what a person has actually done, but on what they promise they will do...or even worse, based on the promise that all the bad stuff they've done in the past is the exact opposite of what they'll do for you.

We are left with simply hoping he's changed.

I've been very honest about this. Had Orgeron taken his 6-2 SC interim and gone to some small school and built them into a winner and rebuilt his coaching brand and worked his way back to a gig like LSU, then I'd have no issues with him as a coach, and anyone that solely pointed to his Ole miss time would be a gad damned fool.

But...he didn't. He all but refused to go small and take a step back and rebuild his image as a head coach, instead opting for getting in through the back door without having earned it through hard work and proving to people he'd actually learned something from his past mistakes.

That's why I have n patience for the "he says he's changed" crowd. Saying is easy...doing is hard. Do more & say less and I'll be won over.

Didn't O himself say that one of the things he learned from jis Ole Miss days was to listen to other people more and not solely his own opinion?
