Unless you're pumping gas in a confined space there's no risk whatsoever.

I had this fat bitch yell at me a year or so ago while i was talking on my phone and filling up. she said i could kill all of them from the signals from my phone or some shite(true story)

I told her to get her arse back in her car and go back to hugging a tree.

For the record, i turn off my car but know people who dont. Its not a big deal. How many news stories do you hear of peoples cars blowing up at gas stations? exactly

If it were even the slightest risk, I would think anyone with an ounce of sense would turn their vehicle off when pumping gas. Oh, wait... there is more than a slight risk? There are combustible fumes all over the place when gas is pumping? And most cars have combustion engines? And some passengers in the pump lane across from you might smoke, and that means open fire near your car and the gas fumes? And you say your car has windows that can open but instead of opening them, you leave your car running because it is hot? How hot is a gas explosion?

Be honest, your parents kept you in a literal bubble.

I don't. No extra danger with modern cars and I'd rather restart my car as few times as possible.

For all practical purposes there will be no difference in the surface temperature of the exhaust system, engine, or any other part of the car that might act as a source of ignition from when it was running to when the car was just shut off.

It's bad enough to hear people freaking out about something they have no idea of, out of sheer ignorance from what they've always been told coupled by anxiety. But to have some bitch yell at you, oh HELL no!

The only reason that gas stations tell you to turn off your engine is to go above and beyond in safety. It would take the air being so saturated in gasoline vapor, that you basically couldn't stand there anyway. Your arse would be trying to catch some fresh air to get a breath real quick like. That's what it would have to be for there to be a danger of combustion from an engine starting. And if that's the case, any engine running would be a danger. Not just yours.

While some are freaking out about gasoline, I wonder how many also go above and beyond and wear nitrile gloves while filling up? It contains a percentage of Benzene, a known carcinogen.

sure...if I remember right, the LEL of gasoline vapors is only a couple of percent. You exceed that every single time you pump gas. I would say that anytime you smell gasoline, you are above the LEL.

I would argue that unless you are in the fueling nozzle or within 4" of the nozzle you would not cross the LEL threshold necessary.

I forgot the exact distance, but about 6" above a open bowl of gas will not produce the necessary LEL at 90 degrees.

How is it different than someone pulling up right next to you with their vehicle running?

Leave on.

Light cigarette while pumping.

Remember when signs warned you of your cell phone able to ignite fire and an explosion?

Always running. Diesel. Although as was said before, you need the right air fuel ratio for gas to go boom. I’ve seen a match put out by an open barrel of gas. Not that I would try that myself.

LOL...I double dog dare you to try and blow up your car at the gas pump by just pumping gas into the tank.

I never refuel while the engine is running. If my daughter is with me while refueling she knows not to stay strapped in while filling up.

She gets out and stands there eating her candy or gum while I refill.

She knows the car could go up in flames while refueling.

I think those vapors need to be much more concentrated for any type of spark to set it off.

The real danger is static build up.

To be honest with modern cars you really don't have to turn them off. Just like you can use cell phones must gas.
