Is it a campaign finance violation if it's your own money?

For the longest time, Trump financed his own campaign. So if Trump paid these women off at a time when he was financing 100% of his run for the White House, did he break any laws?

It wasn’t a campaign expense.
And it wasn’t a campaign finance violation.
And it wasn’t a campaign finance violation.

He wasnt 100% financing his run for the Whitehouse so irrelevant question.

He used his own money to settle issues that predated his candidacy. This is a complete nothing burger.

What?
To OP, of course not, that’s why this is so fun to watch.

The reasoning behind the "campaign finance" angle is because Trump used money to keep quiet information that had the potential to damage his campaign.
quote:
The campaign-finance violations concern Cohen’s role in arranging hush-money payments for Daniels and ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal, who also said she had an affair with Trump. Prosecutors said these payments, which served to suppress damaging information about a candidate for federal office, were tantamount illegal campaign contributions to Trump.
This is nothing more than baiting a line for impeachment if the Democrats take control of the house. However, they may have a problem if this is their strategy:

I’m good enough. I’m smart enough...

Yeah. That’s the reasoning. It’s bullshite. But that’s the reasoning.
You could extend that reasoning to any personal expense. “If my dog doesn’t have dog food, the animal lovers will view me poorly. Chalk that up as a campaign expense.”

What happens if Trump can show that he had Cohen pay hush money to people before he ever ran for office? What else was Cohen for?

The reason behind the “campaign finance” angle is because people have TDS and want to try and “get Trump” on anything.
There is no angle, it’s fabricated for idiots.
He paid with his own money, not a crime and never will be.

We've had so many nothing burgers that I feel like we're in a competitive eating contest.
Just like with Russian collusion, they're going to try and make something stick but there ain't nothing to it.
Based on the brief recordings I heard, Trump wanted it done the legal way, set up a corporation and write a check.

Exactly, and I hope (if they regain the House) the Democrats try to impeach him on this. Watching that grenade blow up in their collective faces will be classic.
ETA: I wonder how many campaign finance skeletons Aunt Maxine and Cedric Richmond have in their closets.

Explain that to the guy who just pled guilty.

If it was the only (or even most important) crime he pled to, I’d be a little more impressed.

It may or may not be a campaign violation but here's what we do know. He committed a minor crime (twice) and paid six figures to hush it up.
This is the sort of thing that for normal people will justify yanking a security clearance. It isn't the crime, it's the coverup.
Nixon was forced out over a similar issue. He didn't commit the Watergate burglaries but was happy to obscure matters.
It makes you wonder what Trump did when he was in Russia as a private citizen. He could engage in whatever he liked outside public scrutiny and he knew it too.
We may never know what that was but this guy does.

Ahhh. All the posters here know the campaign finance laws very well.....NOT. There are individual limits and using the laws to cover up for other payments is a problem.

What minor crime did he commit? Screwing a porn star and Playboy model are now crimes?

What cover up? That he paid two whores to be quiet about a consensual sexual relationship?
