i don't want to live in the city (lived within 610 in Houston for 8 years; frick traffic, frick bums, frick hoods, and the shittiness and crime that go along with it)
i also don't want to live deep in the sticks (i like my high-speed internet too much and don't want to commute 3hrs a day)
i don't want to live in suburbia (i hate cookie cutter gated neighborhoods, you can keep that pretentious horseshite)
i don't want a huge piece of land (no time for upkeep with a 9-5, hobbies, and social life right now)
i don't want a garden home or small yard (my outside dog loves trees and being able to run, want kids to have a big yard)
i don't want a brand new home (most builders nowadays suck, only in it to get rich quick, and carpentry is cheap shite nowadays)
i don't want an old home (don't really have time for a fixer upper, even tho i do like some projects)

Charlotte would meet every one of those criteria.

Sorry, but I wasn't aware until I went there last year. Disgusting. I've been to villages in Africa that didn't stink like that city does. Hell, I've cleaned out my own septic tank before and that wasn't as smelly as NO.

Know how I know you've never actually been to New Orleans?

It was kinda funny when you were trying to a make a joke. Trying to seriously say the entire city smells like that just lets us know you're clueless.

The only place I would consider would be Flagstaff. The heat around Phoenix is a huge no for me, and it's crowded as hell

Yeah, we considered a scenery change a while back and Charlotte was #1 on the list. Ended up in Spring / Woodlands, TX area in an older white people neighborhood. They take pride in their neighborhood but aren't pretentious. It didn't flood and our property value went up in the last year because of it. With a decent sized yard. short commute. and still not too far away from all the entertainment within Houston (Stro's, Rockets, Texans, Theater, Museums, and all the great food options). But am also an hour from Texas back country, great mountain bike trails, and plenty of lakes to fish in.

I don't get out much anyway. The ideal place for me is one that's safe and fairly quiet, has good schools, and is reasonably close to civilization (stores, medical facilities, and restaurants). Oh, and good broadband.

I'm fairly content where I am, though imagine I would be happier somewhere else... so it kind of sucks feeling trapped here. My parents are moving back here from Florida to be closer to my kids while they're young. My wife's parents live close by and have no other family. It would devastate them all if we just upped and moved. I'd say that's one of the only factors keeping me here now.

Too hot for me. I'm not leaving LA to move somewhere even hotter.

The only state school in Louisiana I want to go to is New Orleans. I do not think I would be happy in Shreveport, and a lot of it has to do with where it is and it not aligning to where I want
to be. I need to enjoy where I live and am ready to explore something new with more to offer.

I agree with this. Where I live is pretty important to me. The only reason that we live in Lafayette is because it's near family. If it weren't for that, there is no way that I'd live here. Daily life was much more enjoyable in New Orleans. I wouldn't move to a place like Shreveport, even if you were to double my pay.

dude, you're still in school and having this deep reflection about where you live? a lot of water will have flown under the bridge by the time you've finished and you'll have a completely different outlook, objectives, opportunities, probably meet some woman that you'll follow somewhere.....

I'm not so sure it is hotter. 95 with no humidity isn't that bad. You can actually dress for it unlike LA where 72 in the morning still feels disgusting from the humidity.

Now, yeah, those 110+ days are going to kill you. Like literally.

I didn't live near Phoenix. Probably my least favorite part of the state actually. I lived near the border in Bisbee.

You should look at Virginia tech Carillion in Roanoke, VA for med school. Absolutely gorgeous location in the Blue Ridge mountains right off the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail. Some of the best mountain biking on the East coast, great beer scene, and small enough that life is simple and easy. My wife did her residency there and we absolutely loved it.

Yeah I used to think 90 with humidity was the worst. Then I experienced San Antonio this past July and holy shite that was the hottest temp I’ve ever felt. Thermometer said 105 and it felt like a furnace.

You took all that time writing about the places you’d hate to live, and how you could never live in suburbia, and then you tell us you live in the ultimate suburb and you like it bc of all the traditional obvious reasons people like suburbs.
Just own it. You like suburbia.

Very much.

Traveled the world, but what has always drove me back home, family. I need that. Our family is very tight, as it should be.

I transferred to the u of Kentucky from latech.

I was crushed by the darkness.
Further north, less light in winter, on top of being downwind of great lakes and thus snowing all the time.
I hated it.
Transferred to Murray which is not downwind of lakes. Different planet. Warmer. Brighter. Maybe just in my head.
I loved Murray.
Part of it was that Lexington was started in the 1700s and Murray had zero tall buildings.
Farms all around. The lake.

So yes. Place matters

I have found that the most important real estate to your well-being and happiness is the 6 inches between your ears.

The ideal places to live tend to be very crowded and expensive.

I think it matters more the older you get, if you are active. I can't imagine living in a neighborhood / tight quarters with a bunch of neighbors up close any more. Was fine when kids were younger but now even the kids love the space and freedom we have, the woods, trails, wildlife, etc. But, we are close enough to a city for jobs, school and egads shopping.
