Not in middle/upper middle class neighborhoods though
All it takes is 20-30% of the homeowners to have exterior facing cameras. You're probably on film in a lot of those neighborhoods too.

If they can watch you for "crime" what's to stop them from redefining crime. Hey I left my garbage can out overnight......hey, I have some unpaid tickets for an expired tag...or I have an expired tag.....or I fell on hard times and had to let my auto insurance lapse and my car is parked on the street.
the video would be used when a crime is committed...and frick those people who have unpaid tickets and no auto insurance

I would love this.
ETA:
We're talking about filming PUBLIC roads. 100% want them filmed.
Now, if the cameras are invading private property, like showing people's backyards or zooming in on their homes, that is no bueno.
Just film the streets and sidewalks.

I am for it. Heck I even wish all cars had tracking devices personally. Think of the money saved by patrol cars and highway patrol if any car going at high speeds was automatically flagged instead of paying someone to sit on the side of the roadway and wait.
Think of the time saved investigating murders, rapes, etc if they could see whose cars were in the vicinity.

Why don't you put up cameras on your own property and try being more proactive rather than relying on the government? That's what I'm doing, 8-channel high-def security camera package is like $300 or so these days. Have dash cameras too. Screw paying more taxes when I can setup better equipment for myself.

If they locked up criminals instead of revolving door justice..... they would not need them

I'm ok with it in actual city areas. Adding a few public safety cameras when private security cameras already cover so much isn't a bad thing.
Not a big fan of it in neighborhoods. If a neighbor is filming me rawdogging the wife in the backyard over our 8 ft fence that's one thing and laws cover that.
If a public safety camera is grabbing that it's an invasion of privacy we can't really contest it.
I'm just saying, if I'm gonna be on the net I want to be paid for it.

they pretty much already do
This. Between traffic cameras and citizens and home security or businesses with security, you’d have to be pretty damned rural to not be filmed.

As much as I disagree with the man, Murphy Paul just said in a press conference that the violent cultures that exist in our cities is going to exist regardless of whether or not more police are on the streets. I.E. the shooting on 190 where people shot into cars speeding by near the BRPD HQ.
Crime is going to happen. You can't stop it all. But you can work on making it harder to get away with it. And cameras do that.

Why don't you add a few more cameras then put up a big yard sign with your neighbor if you imagine it to be such a good deterrent? There's no lack of video surveillance as it is yet criminals still do dumb shite because criminals are usually very dumb in the first place. Don't need cities putting up cameras that will get stolen/damaged/never maintained and then tax me for them. Your OP is dumb.

What will it stop in a street, the rare hit and run? And in a lot of towns, sidewalks are on private land, and are easements.
It is insane that Americans willfully want to open this door.

Yeah, because they are menace to society. Let's get em too......big brother and big government NEED those dollars in fines. Let's make it easier for them. Let's have a surveillance state with the government's imprimatur . All in the name of public safety.
Yeah, government NEVER abuses your 4th Amendment rights......naaaaaaah.
