I’ll be in Houston over Labor Day weekend. I definitely want a great steak one night, but also want rec’s for other places, as well, for the other two nights.

Go.

Pappas Bros Steakhouse is really great.
Killen's STQ is great too.
Perry's, but get the pork chop, not the steak.

El Tiempo is legit Tex-Mex if you're looking for that.

If you want to venture for BBQ during the day, the top tier spots are Truth BBQ (hour outside houston) Feges BBQ (open weekdays lunchtime), Killens, Corkscrew. Next up would be Pit Room, Pinkertons, Roegels.

B&B butchers. True Kobe is great.

I've always wanted to try it.

I've been to the one in Dallas and had the pork chop. Top notch.

El Tiempo

I was thinking about that for Friday evening or Saturday lunch.

Not real interested in that on this trip. I always hit Lockhart when I visit my family in Austin, and nothing I have really had anywhere else compares to it.

Y'all keep the rec's coming!

Try and book at One Fifth. Its third iteration is Mediterranean/North African and should be open by then. Probably too late to get a table that weekend, but worth a shot.

Steak is great at Pappas Bros, Brenners on the bayou, B&B, Maestros. Georgia James may be open by then. Should be great and connected to Hay Merchant so a great spot.

Try the food at Calliope if only to compare it to LA poboys and cajun classics. They nail it imo as a nola native. BBQ, Killens of you want to travel south, Tejas Chocolate Craftory if you want to travel Northish, pit room for in the city.

Xochi downtown or Caracol uptown for upscale Mexican/Latin. El tiempo for goat tex mex.

They used to be downtown. I think they moved somewhere southwest, Bellaire maybe? Not fancy at all. Old place was super casual. Haven't been to the new spot, but List has and still speaks highly. They had the right bread, dark roux, and skipped the cliche trap of other Houston Cajun spots.

We always do Taste of Texas. It's closer to where I live and is very good.

Calliope's has 2 locations. I frequent the one on Westheimer. The whole menu is fantastic. I'd recommend getting an 8" roast beef and gravy with a small mixed gumbo for your first trip.

They have one on Westheimer between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford. Same strip mall as Sayad, which is one of my favorite Middle Eastern joints, along with Abdallah's on Hillcroft.

Get on Theodore rex’s Website and see if can get a table, it’s pretty damn great.

If there isn’t a good time, just email them and you’ll get on a wait list. I got table there like that the other week.

I love BBQ in Lockhart for nostalgic reasons...but places like The Pit Room are miles ahead of Kruez and Smitty’s.

I’m not going to suggest steakhouses, because you can google one...Pappas, Vic and Anthony’s, Steak 48...at that price point they are all pretty much the same.

Places you need to check out-Nancy’s Hustle, Riel, UB Preserve, Coltivare, Theodore Rex, El Tiempo for carnitas(always order them old school)/fajitas, OG Ninfas on Navigation for redfish or octopus tacos, La Mexicana for breakfast, Hugo’s or Caracol for Sunday brunch.

My favorites are: Killen's STQ; Eddie V's; Pappas Bros Steakhouse; and Steak 48.

B&B Butchers is likely the best steak in town right now. Make sure you get a tour of the aging locker in the butcher shop. If you hit El Tiempo for tex-mex I highly suggest their new mollejas enchiladas (veal sweetbreads) as an accompaniment to your entree.
