SD you can move east and live cheaper but still enjoy some of the best weather on the planet.

Depends on where you'd have to live. If you can afford a house close to the coast in SD, that would be pretty awesome. But my guess is you'd be living pretty far inland even at $170k. That's no bueno. So I'd probably opt for Tacoma.

I'd prefer a place with more seasons. I like the leaves falling and it getting cold sometimes. Tacoma has fairly mild summers and winters too. I know it sounds odd but I'd get tired of 72 degrees year round.
Plus you have CA taxes. WA doesn't have a state income tax.

San Diego. Tacoma is terrible. The COL will be about the same so why not have better weather and more things to do.
That being said, the areas outside of Tacoma (Cascades, Olympic pennisula, etc,) are pretty amazing. Having lived in the area, Tacoma is just depressing. Seattle is cool though.

San Diego would be a great place to live. But the answer depends on if you are married and/or have kids and if so does the wife work because the real estate is expensive. If you are single this is a no brainer

I spent a week on Puget Sound a couple of years ago and it was fantastic. But that's all I've got.
Two months out of the year theres no better place on earth. The rest of the time sucks unless you like gray skies and mist.

Tacoma isn't perfect and I'll admit I have a lot of fond memories there but it's hard for me to say it's terrible or depressing. Maybe it was you.
I mean, if you live in the hilltop area, sure but there's lots of nicer areas.
San Diego would be awesome but I think I'd rather more $ in my pocket living in Tacoma.

San Diego by a mile. That place is basically paradise on earth.
Better yet, you take the job in Washington and give the employer in San Diego my resume so I can take that one off your hands.

I've lived in both places for a year or so each. Actually, I lived in Tukwila, between Seattle and Tacoma, but close enough.
If I had to choose, I'd choose San Diego. That Seattle/ Tacoma winter weather is depressing as f**k.
If in San Diego and wanting to experience some winter weather, it's about a 3 hour drive to Big Bear. When I was there, I went once to Palomar Mountain when they h ad snow, only about an hour drive north of San Diego.
San Diego is the place to be.

Tacoma isn't exactly the cheapest place to live as well so I'd go with San Diego even if you're living inland and the COL is slightly higher.

I guess it depends on what you think paradise is.
More of what I enjoy doing is in the NW compared to San Diego.
I hate the rain too but there's something about the NW that keeps me here.

Single?
Kids?
Wife? work?
$170k with family and wife not working would be rough.

Hilltop area is full of new condos now. If you haven't lived here in the last six or seven years (not talking to you LSUintheNW) it's changed a lot. There's a reason it's one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

I'd go to Tacoma. Wouldn't even have to think twice.
I enjoy the outdoors though

I hadn't been around town much, besides MSM, in years and was very surprised at all the new construction.
I still saw some of what I was used to but certain undesirables are moving.
