You’d be poor in San Diego on that salary. Live like a king in Washington and vacation in San Diego whenever the frick you want.

If you don't mind no seasonal variety and love beaches SD is probably a place for you. I think it's a great spot to visit but wouldn't live there. PNW is far more to my liking.

Right, San Diego has great weather and beaches but Tacoma has more going for it than some people think. Right on the Puget Sound, easy driving distance to the coast and four national parks. Big city 30 miles away and you can still be out of the city and in the country in minutes. It's really about the lifestyle you prefer.

I guess if you consider roughly the top 90th percentile as poor, then yeah. He’d be poor.

What an idiotic comment.

Me too. I've spent a fair amount of time in WA. Hiking, hopping a ferry and biking some of the islands, white water rafting, kayaking all appeal to me more than a sandy beach and 72 degrees. I guess it's all about personal preference.

Yep, the outdoors lifestyle in the Northwest is hard to beat. Seattles also a short drive away

Yep, having a mountain cabin or an island cabin to get away is a big plus in that part of the country. Get a boat, go island hopping. Seattle and Vancouver not far away.

I also dig the beaches in the NW though they serve a much different function than in SD.

Short stint at the location and renting, i would probably do San Diego. Long stint and with family or buying a house, probably Tacoma.

Washington also has no state income tax. California has the highest in the nation.

You also shave two hours going from Seattle to Portland by living outside Tacoma, I've noticed. I sneak onto I-5 south of JBLM and can make good time to Portland. Seattle to Portland is terrible because of the hellish drive to JBLM, at certain times of day.

The back way through Steilacoom? We always go that way.

Tacoma, WA: $135,000 salary

I moved to Seattle and heard terrible things about Tacoma, until I bought a house there (for fairly cheap, relative to prices now, as my neighbors house just went for 200k more than I paid for mine). The Tacoma area is great. There's good food to be had, Seattle is relatively easy to get to (although the reverse commute works best), and there's always a lot to do. The scenery regularly blows me away. My only issues have been traffic, as it's a hellscape and dating, as the women from here, I've found, are cold and homely, relative to other cities where I've lived.

For that salary, you could live pretty much anywhere, even into Seattle, and you could reverse commute into Tacoma. Georgetown is a nice little neighborhood in Seattle that I love, West Seattle is really nice, Burien is great, I'd avoid Des Moines, parts of Federal Way are really nice, Issaquah, where my family lives, is super swanky, and you have somewhat easy access to Tacoma using Highway 18. I'd avoid the northern suburbs of Seattle though.

Something OP could afford considering his money goes further and doesn't pay ANY state income tax.

Yep, to me the beaches are about harvesting food and winter storm watching. I don't go to the beach during the tourist season.
