What’s funny is I grew up in northern Alabama in the 70s & 80s and never heard anything about black people not being able to swim. I remember going to the city pool as a kid with my friends, both black and white and the black kids swam just like us white kids. Sure, a few of my black friends were scared of the deep end of the pool. But so were some of my white friends. Guess someone forgot to give us the memo that black folks can’t swim.

But one thing that’s often overlooked is that swim caps aren’t designed to protect common hairstyles among black women, adding yet another barrier to their participation in swimming, kayaking, water polo, diving, and other aquatic activities. “It’s an epidemic,” Singleton says of their exclusion.

I swim in a public NYC pool fairly often. There is an epidemic of children requiring goggles and holding their nose when they jump in the pool. The situation needs to be addressed.

I learned to swim in Prairie Creek. Was with a group of 3 other cousins all of whom could swim. I jumped in and learned to dog-paddle and was swimming very amateurishly within a half hour. Honed my skills over the next several years.

Their hair does not need protection. The water beads up and rolls right off.

Not in this thread, which anyone with an IQ above room temperature understood from context.

But take your little “victory” and stop farking-up Zwin’s thread with your childish BS.

Slow people have difficulty with the concept of context. We have several of the slowest active on this thread in SwampSurfer, Roadkill and CapKitty.

My neighbor's kid came to my son's birthday party a couple years ago. He's a black kid, and didn't know how to swim. He saw all the kids swimming in the pool, and must have said to himself "I got this!" He walked past all the adults, and without slowing down or any trepidation at all, walked straight down the steps of the pool... and disappeared under water. We fished him out, and he was fine.

Guess who was the one kid wearing a life jacket in the birthday group photo?
