re: Sullivan playing TE on pass plays, he should be a huge mismatch

How do you think we “hide” him? Don’t you think opposing DC’s when they see him come in will account for him as a WR?
Yeah but you're going to put your elite corners on the boundaries. He'd essentially be a slot WR or TE that's just flexed out. He would definitely be a size mismatch against a nickel corner and obviously a speed mismatch against a linebacker.
Question is are they willing to utilize him in that capacity and throw over the middle.

Along with the depth at OL and WR probably definitely an advantage under Canadas o. Not seeing where ensminger has figured out how to utilize yet per practice stats

I like the move. I just wish they had tried it back in the spring, so he had time to learn the position and be ready for the season.

Love this move. 6’7 235 pound guy playing TE. He’ll have tremendous speed for a TE, and he’s an excellent blocker. Move could work out very well.

It's a good move. As much as I like Foster Moreau, I never understood last year why they would split him out wide. All opposing defenses would do was just sit on his stick routes because he didn't have the speed to beat them deep. Hopefully Sullivan can make the most out of this opportunity.

Based upon alignment, I would think they will try to get him isolated on a lb or safety(mismatches).

You don’t think a 6’7 240 pound guy can block a nickelback in Dime? Come on man think. If they count him for a TE hes too fast for 98% of backers. If they run out in Dime he SHOULD be able to handle a CB who is probably only 6’0 185 lbs. Thats IF Ensminger can find a clever way to exploit those mismatches. Im all for this move they are doing it to find a way to get him the ball. A 6’7 pass catcher shouldn’t be on the pine.

If E was smart he would use Sullivan like Engram from ole miss in wide out sets

Lol IF he Is that much of matchup problem vs CB/S he would be a starting WR.
All I am saying is calling him a TE doesn’t change what opposing D’s are going to do to defend him.
The OP even says “in passing plays”. THINK man!! Lol
Opposing DC’s are not gonna say wait look Coach O in a passing situation is putting in a WR but lining him up as a TE. Let’s defend that WR as a TE.
Ludicrous!!

If Sullivan is good as Engram he wouldn't be getting passed over by younger players.
He's not better at TE than he would be as the fourth receiver in a four wide receiver set.
Right now he's fighting to get in the mix.
I trust Jerry Sullivan will put our best receiving Corp out there. Let's see how Sullivan fits in.

can he block? TE is 50/50 blocking

Quit thinking in miles philosophy, using him just in "pass plays" would be obvious. Bring him in on 1st down, dual tight set and most likely a team won't have nickel package in game and you'll get the lb/safety matchup(mismatch).

for the defense. I would give him a few chances. Anyone disagree?
I see big WRs like Evans being used inside/flex and TEs like Engram being used as WRs and low and behold- it works.

quote:vs DBs. Can he block DEs and LBs? He's going to have to be at least average in order to be effective as a receiving TE as well, or else opposing DCs will just leave in an extra DB in order to avoid mismatches. That's what Nogeaux and some others have been trying to explain, but some of you just seem to be too dense to understand. It's not a video game where your computer opponent recognizes him as a TE. Any DC with half a brain will see a WR at the TE position and respond accordingly if the dude can't block like an actual TE.
he’s an excellent blocker

You mean like Jimmy Graham ? Call him a tight end or a wide receiver , either way he was a match up nightmare in New Orleans !! He just got greedy !
Posted on 8/12/18 at 6:45 am to TOPAL
Sullivan at TE would be ingenious. For the O haters to rush to crap on your idea is laughable. Having a dangerous threat at TE will command coverage adnustments which will leave our wideouts on an island, and also open the box for running lanes.
This is what I believe Morreau brings to the table anyway.

Exactly!
We lost a TE to injury. The coaching staff is trying to utilize a talented player who has the size and athletic ability to play the position. If we have a quarterback who can get the ball to him in the right location he would be a defensive coaches nightmare.
He could be the second coming of Jimmy Graham and some would still bitch.

The decade old question will still apply. Can anyone get him the ball in a playmaking position?
